Du’a al-Arafah is one of the most valuable, important and highly significant supplications which we recite on the Day of Arafah, i.e 9th Zilhajj. This supplication which is present in Mafateeh is coming from the Doyen of Martyrs Imam Hussain (as).

Each of the Imams of the Ahlul Bayt (p) had a specific role that they played in preserving the religion of Islam and the ideology of their followers. Soon after the demise of the Messenger (pbuh&hp), the spiritual progress of the Muslim ummah suffered, except among the few who had a true understanding of our relationship with God as practiced by the Prophet. Only a few decades later, the spiritual fragility of the Muslim community became further evident as people were drawn even further away from God-consciousness and piety during the reign of the Umayyad dynasty, especially with individuals like Muawiyah and Yazid ascending to positions of leadership. Muawiyah and Yazid had desensitized the community away from seeking knowledge and from reflecting on the signs of God. Amid this historical context and its dire circumstances, Imam Hussain (p) recited his remarkable supplication on the Day of Arafah, teaching us the reality of what it means to know God and recognize our responsibilities to our Creator. The supplication, in its beauty, eloquence, and sincerity, is similar in style to other well-known supplications like Dua Kumayl by Imam Ali (p) and Dua Abu Hamza Thumali by Imam al-Sajjad (p).

In this article, we will examine a few exemplary lines from Dua Arafah. It is important to keep in mind that even though this supplication was recited by the Imam on the plains of Arafah during the days of hajj, we do not need to limit our recitation or contemplation of it to the ninth of Dhu al-Hijjah because it contains lessons for everyday use. 1

The Context of Dua Arafah

Perhaps first narrated by Sayyid Ibn Tawus in Iqbal al-amal1 and later in Al–balad al-amin by Shaykh al-Kafami, it is related that Imam Hussain (p) was facing the qiblah on the eve of the Day of Arafah and raised his hands to God “as if a beggar was begging for food.” 2 Here, we see the humble nature of a man like Imam Hussain (p) during his pleading and conversation with his Lord. Similarly, if we desire to achieve high levels of spirituality, then it is vital that we humble ourselves in the eyes of God as a demonstration of sincerity. Like other supplications from the prophetic household, Dua Arafah begins with praise of God and professes our distance from Him. Through humility, there is an opportunity for us to remind ourselves that we are servants on the path of obedience to our Creator and, thus, seek to draw closer to Him. Through worship, ritualistic acts of obedience, and abiding by God’s command and law as stipulated in the Quran, we are reminding ourselves of the uniqueness of submission and, in turn, engraining humility into the fabric of our being.

Praise and Gratitude

Dua Arafah of Imam Hussain (p) is an incredibly lengthy supplication; nonetheless, every line consists of wisdom and insights. As mentioned above, it begins with praise of God, as the Imam states, “Praise be to God, who has nothing to stop His decree, and who nothing hinders when He gives.” 3 Beginning any action or, in this case, supplication with God’s praises is a reminder that everything in creation revolves around Him, the All-Mighty and the All-High. As God states in the Quran, “The seven heavens, the earth, and whatever is between them all glorify Him. There is nothing that does not glorify Him and always praise him, but you do not understand their praise and glorification. He is All-forbearing and All-forgiving.” 4

In another powerful line from this supplication, Imam Hussain (p) states, “You began blessing me before I even became something known [before I was born].” 5 This line allows the reader to enter into a state of deep contemplation and introspection of how many blessings truly surround us and, thus, the need to be in a state of constant gratitude to our Lord. Aside from the blessings of life, family, wealth, happiness, food, and drink, which we encounter and benefit from daily, the reality is that God blessed us with so much before He even created us.

Feeling the Presence of God

A major theme of the supplication of Imam Hussain (p) revolves around feeling God’s presence and being in a state of absolute submission and lowliness to Him. God created us with the fitra, or the primordial nature that drives us to know and be receptive to Him. God states in the Quran, “So set your heart on the religion as a people of pure faith, the origination of [God] according to which He originated mankind (There is no altering [God’s] creation; that is the upright religion, but most people do not know.)” 6 It becomes our responsibility, by reflection, servitude, obedience, and following in the footsteps of Quranic teachings and the instruction of the Messenger (pbuh&hp) and his family, to struggle for our souls to remain on the path of guidance. In another line, attributed to Imam Hussain (p) in Dua Arafah, he eloquently testifies to this reality when he states in the course of the supplication, “How can I provide evidences for you when I am the one who is in question? Is there something else that is more apparent than you (that I need to provide [proof of] your existence). When were you missing such that I need to provide evidence for where you are? When did you go far that we need to seek your traces.”7 These lines are a reminder that God’s presence consistently remains, and it is we, His creation, who are in a state of perpetual dependence on the Creator. That dependence should translate into prayers, fasting, and continuous supplication to our Lord—all acts that can allow the distractions of this temporal world to pass us by and allow for fixation on our duties and responsibilities to our Creator.

Soon thereafter, the narrator of the supplication states that the Imam took a break from reciting, as his eyes filled with tears, where he continued calling out, “Oh God! Make me fear you as though I can see you!” 8 The fear or khushu that Imam Hussain speaks about is not to be frightened by a powerful authority, but rather the fear of disappointing a loved one. Often, our culture, family, and religious leadership describe God as seeking to punish us for every shortcoming as opposed to recollecting and holding onto His divine mercy, compassion, and generosity. The Prophet and his family (pbut) stress a more positive approach to understanding God, and through reflecting upon these lines in the supplication and the prayer in its totality, we can begin to place the necessary building blocks of our relationship with Him in the best spots to make a beautiful structure.

Conclusions

Dua Arafah of Imam Hussain (p) is arguably the most powerful supplication that we have within our collection. From its recitation, coupled with deep contemplation, we can derive numerous ethical, spiritual, and social lessons that we can incorporate into our daily lives. Themes like praise, gratitude, and hope are only a few of the messages that the Imam employs in his understanding and relationship with God, and during these days, or whenever we might see a dip in our spiritual development, reading and reflection upon the lines of this supplication can be something truly transformational.

3. جاء في دعاء عرفة عن الإمام الحسين (ع): ” اَلْحَمْدُ للهِ الَّذى لَيْسَ لِقَضآئِهِ دافِعٌ، وَلا لِعَطائِهِ مانِعٌ”
4. قال الله تعالى: ((سَبِّحُ لَهُ السَّمَاوَاتُ السَّبْعُ وَالْأَرْضُ وَمَن فِيهِنَّ ۚ وَإِن مِّن شَيْءٍ إِلَّا يُسَبِّحُ بِحَمْدِهِ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تَفْقَهُونَ تَسْبِيحَهُمْ ۗ إِنَّهُ كَانَ حَلِيمًا غَفُورً))
5. جاء في دعاء عرفة عن الإمام الحسين (ع): “اِبْتَدَأتَنى بِنِعْمَتِكَ قَبْلَ اَنْ اَكُونَ شَيْئاً مَذكوراً، وَخَلَقْتَنى مِنَ التُّرابِ، ثُمَّ اَسْكَنْتَنِى الاْصْلابَ، آمِناً لِرَيْبِ الْمَنُونِ، وَاخْتِلافِ”
6. قال الله تعالى: ((فَأَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفًا ۚ فِطْرَتَ اللَّـهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النَّاسَ عَلَيْهَا ۚ لَا تَبْدِيلَ لِخَلْقِ اللَّـهِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الدِّينُ الْقَيِّمُ وَلَـٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ))
7. جاء في دعاء عرفة عن الإمام الحسين (ع): ” كَيْفَ يُسْتَدَلُّ عَلَيْكَ بِما هُوَ فى وُجُودِهِ مُفْتَقِرٌ اِلَيْكَ، اَيَكُونُ لِغَيْرِكَ مِنَ الظُّهُورِ ما لَيْسَ لَكَ، حَتّى يَكُونَ هُوَ الْمُظْهِرَ لَكَ، مَتى غِبْتَ حَتّى تَحْتاجَ اِلى دَليل يَدُلُّ عَليْكَ، وَمَتى بَعُدْتَ حَتّى تَكُونَ الاْثارُ هِىَ الَّتى تُوصِلُ اِلَيْكَ”
8. جاء في دعاء عرفة عن الإمام الحسين (ع): “اَللّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنى اَخْشاكَ كَاُنّى اَراكَ”

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِي لَيْسَ لِقَضَائِهِ دَافِعٌ
Praise be to Allah Whose determination cannot be repelled by anything,
وَلاَ لِعَطَائِهِ مَانِعٌ
Whose gifts cannot be stopped by anything,
وَلاَ كَصُنْعِهِ صُنْعُ صَانِعٍ
and Whose making cannot be resembled by the making of anyone.
وَهُوَ ٱلْجَوَادُ ٱلْوَاسِعُ
He is the All-magnanimous, the All-liberal.
فَطَرَ أَجْنَاسَ ٱلْبَدَائِعِ
He originated the genus of the wonderfully created things
وَأَتْقَنَ بِحِكْمَتِهِ ٱلصَّنَائِعَ
and He perfected the made things by His wisdom.
لا تَخْفَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ٱلطَّلاَئِعُ
All growing things cannot be hidden from Him
وَلاَ تَضِيعُ عِنْدَهُ ٱلْوَدَائِعُ
and all things deposited with Him shall never be wasted.
جَازِي كُلِّ صَانِعٍ
He is the Repayer on every deed,
وَرَايِشُ كُلِّ قَانِعٍ
the Enricher of every satisfied one,
وَرَاحِمُ كُلِّ ضَارِعٍ
the Merciful toward every suppliant,
وَمُنْزِلُ ٱلْمَنَافِعِ
and the Revealer of the benefits
وَٱلْكِتَابِ ٱلْجَامِعِ بِٱلنُّورِ ٱلسَّاطِعِ
and the All-comprehensive Book with the glaring light.
وَهُوَ لِلدَّعَوَاتِ سَامِعٌ
He is also the Hearer of prayers,
وَلِلْكُرُبَاتِ دَافِعٌ
the Warder-off of anguishes,
وَلِلدَّرَجَاتِ رَافِعٌ
the Raiser of ranks,
وَلِلْجَبَابِرَةِ قَامِعٌ
and the Suppressor of the tyrants.
فَلاَ إِلٰهَ غَيْرُهُ
There is no god other than Him
وَلاَ شَيْءَ يَعْدِلُهُ
and there is nothing equivalent to Him
وَلَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ
and nothing like a likeness of Him,
وَهُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْبَصِيرُ
and He is the All-hearing, the All-seeing,
ٱللَّطِيفُ ٱلْخَبِيرُ
the All-gentle, the All-aware,
وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
and He has power over all things.
اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَرْغَبُ إِلَيْكَ
O Allah, I willingly desire for You
وَأَشْهَدُ بِٱلرُّبُوبِيَّةِ لَكَ
and I testify to the Lordship of You,
مُقِرّاً بِأَنَّكَ رَبِّي
confessing that You are verily my Lord
وَأَنَّ إِلَيْكَ مَرَدِّي
and to You shall be my return.
اِبْتَدَأْتَنِي بِنِعْمَتِكَ
You had begun bestowing on me
قَبْلَ أَنْ أَكُونَ شَيْئاً مَذْكُوراً
before I was anything worth mentioning,
وَخَلَقْتَنِي مِنَ ٱلتُّرَابِ
and You created me from dust.
ثُمَّ أَسْكَنْتَنِي ٱلأَصْلاَبَ
You then put me up in the loins,
آمِناً لِرَيْبِ ٱلْمَنُونِ
(making me) saved from vicissitudes of time,
وَٱخْتِلافِ ٱلدُّهُورِ وَٱلسِّنِينَ
and change of ages and years.
فَلَمْ أَزَلْ ظَاعِناً مِنْ صُلْبٍ إِلَىٰ رَحِمٍ
I was moving from a loin to a womb
فِي تَقَادُمٍ مِنَ ٱلأَيَّامِ ٱلْمَاضِيَةِ
throughout the passage of the past days
وَٱلْقُرُونِ ٱلْخَالِيَةِ
and the ancient ages;
لَمْ تُخْرِجْنِي لِرَأْفَتِكَ بِي
as You have not taken me out (to this world)—on account of Your sympathy to me,
وَلُطْفِكَ لِي
Your kindness to me,
وَإِحْسَانِكَ إِلَيَّ
and Your compassion to me—
فِي دَوْلَةِ أَئِمَّةِ ٱلْكُفْرِ
in the government of the heads of unbelief
ٱلَّذِينَ نَقَضُوٱ عَهْدَكَ
who breached their covenant with You
وَكَذَّبُوٱ رُسُلَكَ
and denied Your messengers.
لٰكِنَّكَ أَخْرَجْتَنِي لِلَّذِي سَبَقَ لِي مِنَ ٱلْهُدَىٰ
However, You took me out on account of the guidance that You have already known about me
ٱلَّذِي لَهُ يَسَّرْتَنِي
and You have made easy the way to it
وَفِيهِ أَنْشَأْتَنِي
and You have brought me up in it.
وَمِنْ قَبْلِ ذٰلِكَ رَؤُفْتَ بِي
Even before that, You had compassion on me,
بِجَمِيلِ صُنْعِكَ
through Your excellent conferral
وَسَوَابِغِ نِعَمِكَ
and Your affluent bestowals.
فَٱبْتَدَعْتَ خَلْقِي مِنْ مَنِيٍّ يُمْنَىٰ
So, You fashioned my creation from semen that gushed forth
وَأَسْكَنْتَنِي فِي ظُلُمَاتٍ ثَلاَثٍ
and put me up in triple darkness
بَيْنَ لَحْمٍ وَدَمٍ وَجِلْدٍ
among flesh, blood, and skin.
لَمْ تُشْهِدْنِي خَلْقِي
You have not made me witness my creation,
وَلَمْ تَجْعَلْ إِلَيَّ شَيْئاً مِنْ أَمْرِي
and You have not referred any part of my creation to me.
ثُمَّ أَخْرَجْتَنِي لِلَّذِي سَبَقَ لِي مِنَ ٱلْهُدَىٰ
You then took me out on account of the guidance that You have already known about me
إِلَىٰ ٱلدُّنْيَا تَامّاً سَوِيّاً
to the world, perfect and in sound health.
وَحَفِظْتَنِي فِي ٱلْمَهْدِ طِفْلاً صَبِيّاً
You have safeguarded me in the cradle as small child.
وَرَزَقْتَنِي مِنَ ٱلْغِذَاءِ لَبَناً مَرِيّاً
You have provided me with wholesome milk as food.
وَعَطَفْتَ عَلَيَّ قُلُوبَ ٱلْحَوَاضِنِ
You have made the hearts of the nursemaids tender.
وَكَفَّلْتَنِي ٱلأُمَّهَاتِ ٱلرَّوَاحِمَ
You have given me into the charge of merciful mothers.
وَكَلَأْتَنِي مِنْ طَوَارِقِ ٱلْجَانِّ
You have saved me from the visits of the Jinn.
وَسَلَّمْتَنِي مِنَ ٱلزِّيَادَةِ وَٱلنُّقْصَانِ
You have delivered me from increase and decrease.
فَتَعَالَيْتَ يَا رَحِيمُ يَا رَحْمٰنُ
So, Exalted be You, O All-merciful, O All-beneficent.
حَتَّىٰ إِذَا ٱسْتَهْلَلْتُ نَاطِقاً بِٱلْكَلاَمِ
When I commenced (my life) by pronouncing words,
أَتْمَمْتَ عَلَيَّ سَوَابِغَ ٱلإِنْعَامِ
You perfected for me the affluent bestowals,
وَرَبَّيتَنِي زَائِداً فِي كُلِّ عَامٍ
and brought me up with an increase every year.
حَتَّىٰ إِذَا ٱكْتَمَلَتْ فِطْرَتِي
When my creation was accomplished,
وَٱعْتَدَلَتْ مِرَّتِي
and my power became straight,
أَوْجَبْتَ عَلَيَّ حُجَّتَكَ
You put me under the obligation of Your Claim,
بِأَنْ أَلْهَمْتَنِي مَعْرِفَتَكَ
which is that You inspired me with recognition of You
وَرَوَّعْتَنِي بِعَجَائِبِ حِكْمَتِكَ
and alarmed me by the wonders of Your wisdom,
وَأَيْقَظْتَنِي لِمَا ذَرَأْتَ فِي سَمَائِكَ وَأَرْضِكَ
and You aroused in me that which You created in Your heavens and lands,
مِنْ بَدَائِعِ خَلْقِكَ
which is the excellent creation of You.
وَنَبَّهْتَنِي لِشُكْرِكَ وَذِكْرِكَ
You attracted my attentions to thank and mention You.
وَأَوْجَبْتَ عَلَيَّ طَاعَتَكَ وَعِبَادَتَكَ
You made obligatory on me to obey and worship You.
وَفَهَّمْتَنِي مَا جَاءَتْ بِهِ رُسُلُكَ
You made me understand that with which Your Apostles came.
وَيَسَّرْتَ لِي تَقَبُّلَ مَرْضَاتِكَ
You made easy for me to find agreeable Your pleasure.
وَمَنَنْتَ عَلَيَّ فِي جَمِيعِ ذٰلِكَ
You bestowed upon me with the favor of all that,
بِعَوْنِكَ وَلُطْفِكَ
out of Your aid and Your gentleness.
ثُمَّ إِذْ خَلَقْتَنِي مِنْ خَيْرِ ٱلثَّرَىٰ
As You created me from the best of soil,
لَمْ تَرْضَ لِي يَا إِلٰهِي نِعْمَةً دُونَ أُخْرَىٰ
You, my God, have not wanted for me to have a certain favor (and to be deprived of another)
وَرَزَقْتَنِي مِنْ أَنْوَاعِ ٱلْمَعَاشِ
and You therefore provided me with the various kinds of living
وَصُنُوفِ ٱلرِّيَاشِ
and types of wealth,
بِمَنِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ ٱلأَعْظَمِ عَلَيَّ
out of Your great and grand conferral upon me,
وَإِحْسَانِكَ ٱلْقَدِيمِ إِلَيَّ
and Your eternal kindness to me.
حَتَّىٰ إِذَا أَتْمَمْتَ عَلَيَّ جَمِيعَ ٱلنِّعَمِ
As You perfected for me all the graces
وَصَرَفْتَ عَنِّي كُلَّ ٱلنِّقَمِ
and warded off all misfortunes,
لَمْ يَمْنَعْكَ جَهْلِي وَجُرْأَتِي عَلَيْكَ
my ignorance of You and challenge have not stopped You
أَنْ دَلَلْتَنِي إِلَىٰ مَا يُقَرِّبُنِي إِلَيْكَ
from showing me that which takes me near to You,
وَوَفَّقْتَنِي لِمَا يُزْلِفُنِي لَدَيْكَ
and from leading me to that which grants me proximity to You.
فَإِنْ دَعَوْتُكَ أَجَبْتَنِي
So, if I pray You, You will respond to me;
وَإِنْ سَأَلْتُكَ أَعْطَيْتَنِي
and if I beg You, You will give me;
وَإِنْ أَطَعْتُكَ شَكَرْتَنِي
and if I obey You, You will thank me;
وَإِنْ شَكَرْتُكَ زِدْتَنِي
and if I thank You, You will give me more.
كُلُّ ذٰلِكَ إِكْمَالاً لأَنْعُمِكَ عَلَيَّ
All that is completion of Your favors for me,
وَإِحْسَانِكَ إِلَيَّ
and Your kindness to me.
فَسُبْحَانَكَ سُبْحَانَكَ
So, all glory be to You; all glory be to You.
مِنْ مُبْدِيً مُعِيدٍ
You are verily Originator and Reproducer (of the creation)
حَمِيدٍ مَجِيدٍ
and worthy of all praise and full of all glory.
وَتَقَدَّسَتْ أَسْمَاؤُكَ
Holy be Your Names
وَعَظُمَتْ آلاؤُكَ
as Your bounties are so immeasurable.
فَأَيَّ نِعَمِكَ يَا إِلٰهِي أُحْصِي عَدَداً وَذِكْراً؟
Which of Your favors, O my God, can I count in numbers and examples?
أَمْ أَيَّ عَطَايَاكَ أَقُومُ بِهَا شُكْراً
Or which of Your gifts can I thank properly?
وَهِيَ يَا رَبِّ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ أَنْ يُحْصِيهَا ٱلْعَادُّونَ
They are, O my Lord, too numerous to be counted by counters
أَوْ يَبْلُغَ عِلْماً بِهَا ٱلْحَافِظُونَ
or to be realized by memorizers.
ثُمَّ مَا صَرَفْتَ وَدَرَأْتَ عَنِّي
Moreover, that which You have warded off and repelled,
اللَّهُمَّ مِنَ ٱلضُّرِّ وَٱلضَّرَّاءِ
O Allah, from (the various kinds of) harm and mischief
أَكْثَرُ مِمَّا ظَهَرَ لِي مِنَ ٱلْعَافِيَةِ وَٱلسَّرَّاءِ
is more than that which came to me from wellbeing and joy.
وَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ يَا إِلٰهِي بِحَقِيقَةِ إِيـمَانِي
And I bear witness, O my God, with my true belief,
وَعَقْدِ عَزَمَاتِ يَقِينِي
and the fortitude of the determinations of my conviction
وَخَالِصِ صَرِيحِ تَوْحِيدِي
and the purity of my open belief in Your Oneness
وَبَاطِنِ مَكْنُونِ ضَمِيرِي
and the essence of the secret of my conscience,
وَعَلاَئِقِ مَجَارِي نُورِ بَصَرِي
and the ties of the canals of the light of my sight,
وَأَسَارِيرِ صَفْحَةِ جَبِينِي
and the lines of my forehead
وَخُرْقِ مَسَارِبِ نَفْسِي
and the hallows of the courses of my breath,
وَخَذَارِيفِ مَارِنِ عِرْنِينِي
and the (nasal) cavities of my nose,
وَمَسَارِبِ صِمَاخِ سَمْعِي
and the courses of the meatus of my hearing,
وَمَا ضَمَّتْ وَأَطْبَقَتْ عَلَيْهِ شَفَتَايَ
and whatever my two lips hide and cover up,
وَحَرَكَاتِ لَفْظِ لِسَانِي
and the motions of the vocalization of my tongue,
وَمَغْرَزِ حَنَكِ فَمِي وَفَكِّي
and the socket of the palate of my mouth and jaw,
وَمَنَابِتِ أَضْرَاسِي
and the matrices of my dents,
وَمَسَاغِ مَطْعَمِي وَمَشْرَبِي
and the tasting of my food and my drink,
وَحِمَالَةِ أُمِّ رَأْسِي
and the carrier of my skill,
وَبُلُوعِ فَارِغِ حَبَائِلِ عُنُقِي
and the tube of the tissues of my neck
وَمَا ٱشْتَمَلَ عَلَيْهِ تَامُورُ صَدْرِي
and what is included by the cloak of my chest,
وَحَمَائِلِ حَبْلِ وَتِينِي
and the carriers of the cord of my aorta,
وَنِيَاطِ حِجَابِ قَلْبِي
and the cords of the pericardium of my heart,
وَأَفْلاذِ حَوَاشِي كَبِدِي
and the pieces of the retinues of my liver,
وَمَا حَوَتْهُ شَرَاسِيفُ أَضْلاَعِي
and that which is included by the cartilages of my ribs,
وَحِقَاقِ مَفَاصِلِي
and the cavities of my joints,
وَقَبْضِ عَوَامِلِي
and the interactings of my organisms,
وَأَطْرَافِ أَنَامِلِي
and the extremes of my fingertips,
وَلَحْمِي وَدَمِي
and my flesh, and my blood,
وَشَعْرِي وَبَشَرِي
and my hair, and my skin,
وَعَصَبِي وَقَصَبِي
and my nerve, and my sinews,
وَعِظَامِي وَمُخِّي وَعُرُوقِي
and my bones, and my brain, and my veins,
وَجَمِيعِ جَوَارِحِي
and all of my organs,
وَمَا ٱنْتَسَجَ عَلَىٰ ذٰلِكَ أَيَّامَ رِضَاعِي
and that which was pieced together during the days of my suckling,
وَمَا أَقَلَّتِ ٱلأَرْضُ مِنِّي
and whatever of my body that the ground carries,
وَنَوْمِي وَيَقْظَتِي وَسُكُونِي
and my sleeping, and my wakefulness, and my motionlessness,
وَحَرَكَاتِ رُكُوعِي وَسُجُودِي
and the movements of my bowing and prostration;
أَنْ لَوْ حَاوَلْتُ وَٱجْتَهَدْتُ مَدَىٰ ٱلأَعْصَارِ
(by all that I bear witness) that if I try my best and strive throughout all ages
وَٱلأَحْقَابِ لَوْ عُمِّرْتُهَا
and all times, if I live them,
أَنْ أُؤَدِّيَ شُكْرَ وَاحِدَةٍ مِنْ أَنْعُمِكَ
to thank properly only one of Your favors,
مَا ٱسْتَطَعْتُ ذٰلِكَ
I will not be able to do that,
إِلاَّ بِمَنِّكَ ٱلْمُوجَبِ عَلَيَّ بِهِ شُكْرُكَ
except through a favor of You, which also requires me to thank You for it,
أَبَداً جَدِيداً
once again with new thanking
وَثَنَاءً طَارِفاً عَتِيداً
and with praise that is newly acquired and newly prepared.
أَجَلْ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتُ
True is this! And if I try hard,
أَنَا وَٱلْعَادُّونَ مِنْ أَنَامِكَ
as well as the counters from Your creatures,
أَنْ نُحْصِيَ مَدَىٰ إِنْعَامِكَ
to count the scope of Your favoring,
سَالِفِهِ وَآنِفِهِ
both the past and the present,
مَا حَصَرْنَاهُ عَدَداً
we shall never be able to calculate it in number,
وَلاَ أَحْصَيْنَاهُ أَمَداً
or count it in time.
هَيْهَاتَ أَنَّىٰ ذٰلِكَ
Too far is this! How can it be!
وَأَنْتَ ٱلْمُخْبِرُ فِي كِتَابِكَ ٱلنَّاطِقِ
While it is You Who have informed in Your rational Book
وَٱلنَّبَأِ ٱلصَّادِقِ
and true news:
”وَإِنْ تَعُدُّوٱ نِعْمَةَ اللّهِ لاَ تُحْصُوهَا“
“And if you count Allah’s favors, you will not be able to number them.”
صَدَقَ كِتَابُكَ ٱللَّهُمَّ وَإِنْبَاؤُكَ
True is Your Book, O Allah, and Your informing.
وَبَلَّغَتْ أَنْبِيَاؤُكَ وَرُسُلُكَ
Your Prophets and Messengers have conveyed
مَا أَنْزَلْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ وَحْيِكَ
what You revealed to them, from Your Revelation,
وَشَرَعْتَ لَهُمْ وَبِهِمْ مِنْ دِينِكَ
and what You have made plain for them and through them Your religion.
غَيْرَ أَنِّي يَا إِلٰهِي
Nevertheless, O my God,
أَشْهَدُ بِجُهْدِي وَجِدِّي
I bear witness by my ultimate possibility and my diligence
وَمَبْلَغِ طَاقَتِي وَوُسْعِي
and the scope of my vigor and my capacity,
وَأَقُولُ مُؤْمِناً مُوقِناً
and I say with full faith and conviction:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِي لَمْ يَتَّخِذْ وَلَداً
All praise be to Allah Who has not taken to Himself a son
فَيَكُونَ مَوْرُوثاً
to be inherited,
وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ شَرِيكٌ فِي مُلْكِهِ
and Who does not have a partner in His kingdom,
فَيُضَادُّهُ فِيمَا ٱبْتَدَعَ
to oppose Him in what He fashions,
وَلاَ وَلِيٌّ مِنَ ٱلذُّلِّ
and Who does not have a helper to save Him from disgrace,
فَيُرْفِدَهُ فِيمَا صَنَعَ
to help Him in what He makes.
فَسُبْحَانَهُ سُبْحَانَهُ
So, glory be to Him, glory be to Him.
لَوْ كَانَ فِيهِمَا آلِهَةٌ إِلاَّ ٱللَّهُ لَفَسَدَتَا وَتَفَطَّرَتَا
If there had been in them any gods except Allah, they would both have certainly been in a state of disorder and destruction.
سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْوَاحِدِ ٱلأَحَدِ ٱلصَّمَدِ
All glory be to Allah, the One, the Only One, the Besought of all,
ٱلَّذِي لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ
Who begets not nor is He begotten,
وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُواً أَحَدٌ
and there is none like Him.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ حَمْداً يُعَادِلُ حَمْدَ مَلائِكَتِهِ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ
All praise be to Allah—praise that is equal to the praise of His Favorite Angels,
وَ أَنْبِيَائِهِ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ
and His missioned Prophets.
وَصَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ خِيَرَتِهِ
May Allah send blessings to His Select,
مُحَمَّدٍ خَاتَمِ ٱلنَّبِيِّينَ
Muhammad, the Seal of Prophets,
وَآلِهِ ٱلطَّيِّبِينَ ٱلطَّاهِرِينَ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ وَسَلَّمَ
and upon his Household, the pure, immaculate, and well-chosen, and may He send benedictions upon them.
Imam (peace be upon him) then besought Almighty Allah so earnestly that his eyes shed tears. He then said
اَللَّهُمَّ ٱجْعَلْنِي أَخْشَاكَ كَأَنِّي أَرَاكَ
O Allah, (please) make me fear You as if I can see You.
وَأَسْعِدْنِي بِتَقْوَاكَ
Make happy by fearing You.
وَلاَ تُشْقِنِي بِمَعْصِيَتِكَ
Do not make me unhappy by disobeying You.
وَخِرْ لِي فِي قَضَائِكَ
Choose for me through Your decree.
وَبَارِكْ لِي فِي قَدَرِكَ
Bless me through Your determination,
حَتَّىٰ لا أُحِبَّ تَعْجِيلَ مَا أَخَّرْتَ
so that I will not long for hastening that which You have delayed
وَلاَ تَأْخِيرَ مَا عَجَّلْتَ
or delaying that which You would hasten.
اَللَّهُمَّ ٱجْعَلْ غِنَايَ فِي نَفْسِي
O Allah, (please) make my richness in my conscience,
وَٱلْيَقِينَ فِي قَلْبِي
conviction in my hear,
وَٱلإِخْلاَصَ فِي عَمَلِي
sincerity in my deeds,
وَٱلنُّوْرَ فِي بَصَرِي
light in my sight,
وَٱلْبَصِيرَةَ فِي دِينِي
and insight in my religion.
وَمَتِّعْنِي بِجَوَارِحِي
Make me find enjoyment in my organs.
وَٱجْعَلْ سَمْعِي وَبَصَرِي ٱلْوَارِثَيْنِ مِنِّي
Make my hearing and my sight sound until I am inherited.
وَٱنْصُرْنِي عَلَىٰ مَنْ ظَلَمَنِي
Grant me victory over him who wrongs me,
وَأَرِنِي فِيهِ ثَأْرِي وَمَآرِبِي
make me witness my avenge and objective in him,
وَأَقِرَّ بِذٰلِكَ عَيْنِي
and make it the delight of my eye.
اَللَّهُمَّ ٱكْشِفْ كُرْبَتِي
O Allah, (please) relieve my agony,
وَٱسْتُرْ عَوْرَتِي
conceal my flaws,
وَٱغْفِرْ لِي خَطِيئَتِي
forgive my sin,
وَٱخْسَأْ شَيْطَانِي
drive away my devil from me,
وَفُكَّ رِهَانِي
redeem my mortgage,
وَٱجْعَلْ لِي يَا إِلٰهِي ٱلدَّرَجَةَ ٱلْعُلْيَا
and decide for me, O my God, the supreme rank
فِي ٱلآخِرَةِ وَٱلأُولَىٰ
in the Hereafter and in the former (life).
اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ كَمَا خَلَقْتَنِي
O Allah, all praise be to You for You have created me
فَجَعَلْتَنِي سَمِيعاً بَصِيراً
and made me hear and see.
وَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ كَمَا خَلَقْتَنِي
All praise be to You for you have created me
فَجَعَلْتَنِي خَلْقاً سَوِيّاً رَحْمَةً بِي
and made my creation perfect, on account of Your having mercy on me,
وَقَدْ كُنْتَ عَنْ خَلْقِي غَنِيّاً
and You could dispense with creating me.
رَبِّ بِمَا بَرَأْتَنِي فَعَدَّلْتَ فِطْرَتِي
O my Lord, as You gave rise to me and perfected my creation;
رَبِّ بِمَا أَنْشَأْتَنِي فَأَحْسَنْتَ صُورَتِي
O my Lord, as You originated me and did well my form;
رَبِّ بِمَا أَحْسَنْتَ إِلَيَّ وَفِي نَفْسِي عَافَيْتَنِي
O my Lord, as You conferred favors on me and granted me wellbeing in my self;
رَبِّ بِمَا كَلَأْتَنِي وَوَفَّقْتَنِي
O my Lord, as You saved me and led me to success;
رَبِّ بِمَا أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ فَهَدَيْتَنِي
O my Lord, as You bestowed favors on me and guided me;
رَبِّ بِمَا أَوْلَيْتَنِي وَمِنْ كُلِّ خَيْرٍ أَعْطَيْتَنِي
O my Lord, as You presented me and gave me from every good;
رَبِّ بِمَا أَطْعَمْتَنِي وَسَقَيْتَنِي
O my Lord, as you fed me and watered me;
رَبِّ بِمَا أَغْنَيْتَنِي وَأَقْنَيْتَنِي
O my Lord, as You enriched me and gave me to hold;
رَبِّ بِمَا أَعَنْتَنِي وَأَعْزَزْتَنِي
O my Lord, as You helped me and braced me;
رَبِّ بِمَا أَلْبَسْتَنِي مِنْ سِتْرِكَ ٱلصَّافِي
O my Lord, as you clothed me from Your pure cover
وَيَسَّرْتَ لِي مِنْ صُنْعِكَ ٱلْكَافِي
and made easy for me Your adequate making,
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
so, (please) send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,
وَأَعِنِّي عَلَىٰ بَوَائِقِ ٱلدُّهُورِ
help me against calamities of ages
وَصُرُوفِ ٱللَّيَالِي وَٱلأَيَّامِ
and changes of nights and days,
وَنَجِّنِي مِنْ أَهْوَالِ ٱلدُّنْيَا
rescue me from the horrors of this world
وَكُرُبَاتِ ٱلآخِرَةِ
and the anguishes of the Hereafter,
وَٱكْفِنِي شَرَّ مَا يَعْمَلُ ٱلظَّالِمُونَ فِي ٱلأَرْضِ
and save me from the evils of what the wrongdoers do in the earth.
اللَّهُمَّ مَا أَخَافُ فَٱكْفِنِي
O Allah, as to what I anticipate, (please) save me (from it).
وَمَا أَحْذَرُ فَقِنِي
As to what I watch out, (please) protect me (against it).
وَفِي نَفْسِي وَدِينِي فَٱحْرُسْنِي
Safeguard me in my soul and religion,
وَفِي سَفَرِي فَٱحْفَظْنِي
watch over me in my journeys,
وَفِي أَهْلِي وَمَالِي فَٱخْلُفْنِي
be in charge of my family members and properties during my absence,
وَفِي مَا رَزَقْتَنِي فَبَارِكْ لِي
bless me in that which You provide as sustenance,
وَفِي نَفْسِي فَذَلِّلْنِي
make me see myself as humble,
وَفِي أَعْيُنِ ٱلنَّاسِ فَعَظِّمْنِي
make people see me as great,
وَمِنْ شَرِّ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلإِنْسِ فَسَلِّمْنِي
keep me sound from the evils of the Jinn and people,
وَبِذُنُوبِي فَلاَ تَفْضَحْنِي
do not disclose me because of my sins,
وَبِسَرِيرَتِي فَلاَ تُخْزِنِي
do not disgrace me because of the secret side (of myself),
وَبِعَمَلِي فَلاَ تَبْتَلِنِي
do not try me in my deeds,
وَنِعَمَكَ فَلاَ تَسْلُبْنِي
do not deprive me of Your bounties,
وَإِلَىٰ غَيْرِكَ فَلاَ تَكِلْنِي
and do not refer me to anyone other than You.
إِلٰهِي إِلَىٰ مَنْ تَكِلُنِي
To whom do You entrust me?
إِلَىٰ قَرِيبٍ فَيَقْطَعُنِي
To a relative, and he will rupture my relation with him!
أَمْ إِلَىٰ بَعِيدٍ فَيَتَجَهَّمُنِي
Or to a strange, and he will glower at me!
أَمْ إِلَىٰ ٱلْمُسْتَضْعِفِينَ لِي
Or to those who deem me weak!
وَأَنْتَ رَبِّي وَمَلِيكُ أَمْرِي
While You are my Lord and the master of my affairs!
أَشْكُو إِلَيْكَ غُرْبَتِي وَبُعْدَ دَارِي
I complain to You about my alienation and my foreignness
وَهَوَانِي عَلَىٰ مَنْ مَلَّكْتَهُ أَمْرِي
and my ignominy in the eyes of him whom You have given domination over me.
إِلٰهِي فَلاَ تُحْلِلْ عَلَيَّ غَضَبَكَ
So, O my God, do not make Your wrath come upon me.
فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ غَضِبْتَ عَلَيَّ فَلاَ أُبَالِي سِوَاكَ
If You are not wrathful with me, then I care for nothing save You.
سُبْحَانَكَ غَيْرَ أَنَّ عَافِيَتَكَ أَوْسَعُ لِي
All glory be to You; yet, Your granting me wellbeing is more favorable for me.
فَأَسْأَلُكَ يَا رَبِّ بِنُورِ وَجْهِكَ
So, I beseech You, O my Lord, in the name of the Light of Your Face
ٱلَّذِي أَشْرَقَتْ لَهُ ٱلأَرْضُ وَٱلسَّمَاوَاتُ
to which the earth and the heavens have shone,
وَكُشِفَتْ بِهِ ٱلظُّلُمَاتُ
by which all darkness has been uncovered,
وَصَلُحَ بِهِ أَمْرُ ٱلأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلآخِرِينَ
and by which the affairs of the past and the coming generations are made right,
أَنْ لاَ تُمِيتَنِي عَلَىٰ غَضَبِكَ
(please) do not cause me to die while You are wrathful with me
وَلاَ تُنْزِلْ بِي سَخَطَكَ
and do not inflict on me Your rage.
لَكَ ٱلْعُتْبَىٰ لَكَ ٱلْعُتْبَىٰ
You have the right to scold; You have the right to scold;
حَتَّىٰ تَرْضَىٰ قَبْلَ ذٰلِكَ
until You are pleased (with me) before that.
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ
There is no god save You;
رَبُّ ٱلْبَلَدِ ٱلْحَرَامِ
Lord of the Holy City,
وَٱلْمَشْعَرِ ٱلْحَرَامِ
the Holy Monument,
وَٱلْبَيْتِ ٱلْعَتِيقِ
and the Ancient House
ٱلَّذِي أَحْلَلْتَهُ ٱلْبَرَكَةَ
that You have encompassed with blessing
وَجَعَلْتَهُ لِلنَّاسِ أَمْناً
and made security for people.
يَا مَنْ عَفَا عَنْ عَظِيمِ ٱلذُّنُوبِ بِحِلْمِهِ
O He Who pardoned the grand sins by His forbearance!
يَا مَنْ أَسْبَغَ ٱلنَّعْمَاءَ بِفَضْلِهِ
O He Who bestowed bounties by His favoring!
يَا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ ٱلْجَزِيلَ بِكَرَمِهِ
O He Who gave in abundance by His generosity!
يَا عُدَّتِي فِي شِدَّتِي
O my means in my hardship!
يَا صَاحِبِي فِي وَحْدَتِي
O my companion in my loneliness!
يَا غِيَاثِي فِي كُرْبَتِي
O my relief in my agony!
يَا وَلِيِّي فِي نِعْمَتِي
O my Benefactor in my amenities!
يَا إِلٰهِي وَإِلٰهَ آبَائِي
O my God and the God of my forefathers:
إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ
Abraham, Ishmael,
وَإِسْحَاقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ
Isaac, and Jacob;
وَرَبَّ جَبْرَائِيلَ وَمِيكَائِيلَ وَإِسْرَافِيلَ
the Lord of Gabriel, Michael, and Seraph;
وَرَبَّ مُحَمَّدٍ خَاتَمِ ٱلنَّبِيِّينَ
the Lord of Muhammad, the Seal of Prophets,
وَآلِهِ ٱلْمُنْتَجَبِينَ
and his elite Household;
وَمُنْزِلَ ٱلتَّوْرَاةِ وَٱلإِنْجِيلِ
the Revealer of the Torah, the Gospel,
وَٱلزَّبُورِ وَٱلْفُرْقَانِ
the Psalms, and the Furqan;
وَمُنَزِّلَ كٰهٰيٰعصٰ وَطٰهٰ وَيٰس
the Revealer of kaf-ha-ya-`ayn-sad and ta-ha, ya-sin,
وَٱلْقُرْآنِ ٱلْحَكِيمِ
and the Qur’an, full of wisdom.
أَنْتَ كَهْفِي حِينَ تُعْيِينِي ٱلْمَذَاهِبُ فِي سَعَتِهَا
You are my haven when the wide courses fail to carry me
وَتَضِيقُ بِيَ ٱلأَرْضُ بِرُحْبِهَا
and when the earth, despite its width, become too narrow to bear me.
وَلَوْلاَ رَحْمَتُكَ لَكُنْتُ مِنَ ٱلْهَالِكِينَ
Without Your mercy, I would have been of those perishing.
وَأَنْتَ مُقِيلُ عَثْرَتِي
You overlook my slips;
وَلَوْلاَ سَتْرُكَ إِيَّايَ لَكُنْتُ مِنَ ٱلْمَفْضُوحِينَ
and without Your covering me, I would have been of those exposed.
وَأَنْتَ مُؤَيِّدِي بِٱلنَّصْرِ عَلَىٰ أَعْدَائِي
You aid me with Your support against my enemies;
وَلَوْلاَ نَصْرُكَ إِيَّايَ لَكُنْتُ مِنَ ٱلْمَغْلُوبِينَ
and without Your support, I would have been of those overwhelmed.
يَا مَنْ خَصَّ نَفْسَهُ بِٱلسُّمُوِّ وَٱلرِّفْعَةِ
O He Who gives Himself exclusively superiority and highness;
فَأَوْلِيَاؤُهُ بِعِزِّهِ يَعْتَزُّونَ
so, His friends pride themselves on account of His pride.
يَا مَنْ جَعَلَتْ لَهُ ٱلْمُلُوكُ نِيرَ ٱلْمَذَلَّةِ عَلَىٰ أَعْنَاقِهِمْ
O He for Whom the kings put the yoke of humiliation on their necks;
فَهُمْ مِنْ سَطَوَاتِهِ خَائِفُونَ
for they are fearful of His authority.
يَعْلَمُ خَائِنَةَ ٱلأَعْيُنِ وَمَا تُخْفِي ٱلصُّدُورُ
He knows the stealthy looks of eyes and that which the breasts conceal
وَغَيْبَ مَا تَأْتِي بِهِ ٱلأَزْمِنَةُ وَٱلدُّهُورُ
and the future of the times and ages.
يَا مَنْ لاَ يَعْلَمُ كَيْفَ هُوَ إِلاَّ هُوَ
O He save Whom none knows how He is!
يَا مَنْ لاَ يَعْلَمُ مَا هُوَ إِلاَّ هُوَ
O He save Whom none knows what He is!
يَا مَنْ لاَ يَعْلَمُ مَا يَعْلَمُهُ إِلاَّ هُوَ
O He save Whom none knows what He knows!
يَا مَنْ كَبَسَ ٱلأَرْضَ عَلَىٰ ٱلْمَاءِ
O He Who surfaced the earth over the water
وَسَدَّ ٱلْهَوَاءَ بِٱلسَّمَاءِ
and blocked the air with the heavens!
يَا مَنْ لَهُ أَكْرَمُ ٱلأَسْمَاءِ
O He Who has the noblest of names!
يَا ذَا ٱلْمَعْرُوفِ ٱلَّذِي لاَ يَنْقَطِعُ أَبَداً
O Owner of favor that is never interrupted!
يَا مُقَيِّضَ ٱلرَّكْبِ لِيُوسُفَ فِي ٱلْبَلَدِ ٱلْقَفْرِ
O He Who directed the caravan towards Joseph in the wasteland,
وَمُخْرِجَهُ مِنَ ٱلْجُبِّ
took him out of the pit,
وَجَاعِلَهُ بَعْدَ ٱلْعُبُودِيَّةِ مَلِكاً
and made him king after enslavement!
يَا رَادَّهُ عَلَىٰ يَعْقُوبَ
O He Who had returned him to Jacob
بَعْدَ أَنِ ٱبْيَضَّتْ عَيْنَاهُ مِنَ ٱلْحُزْنِ فَهُوَ كَظِيمٌ
after his eyes became white on account of the grief, and he was a repressor of grief!
يَا كَاشِفَ ٱلضُّرِّ وَٱلْبَلْوَىٰ عَنْ أَيُّوبَ
O He Who removed the distress and misfortune from Job
وَمُمْسِكَ يَدَيْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ ذَبْحِ ٱبْنِهِ
and withheld the hands of Abraham from slaying his son
بَعْدَ كِبَرِ سِنِّهِ وَفَنَاءِ عُمُرِهِ
after his old age and termination of his lifetime!
يَا مَنِ ٱسْتَجَابَ لِزَكَرِيَّا
O He Who responded to Zachariah
فَوَهَبَ لَهُ يَحْيَىٰ
and granted him John
وَلَمْ يَدَعْهُ فَرْداً وَحِيداً
without leaving him alone and lonely!
يَا مَنْ أَخْرَجَ يُونُسَ مِنْ بَطْنِ ٱلْحُوتِ
O He Who took Jonah out of the belly of the big fish!
يَا مَنْ فَلَقَ ٱلْبَحْرَ لِبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ
O He Who cleft the sea to the children of Israel;
فَأَنْجَاهُمْ وَجَعَلَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَجُنُودَهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُغْرَقِينَ
so, He saved them and made Pharaoh and his army of the drowned!
يَا مَنْ أَرْسَلَ ٱلرِّيَاحَ مُبَشِّرَاتٍ بَيْنَ يَدَيْ رَحْمَتِهِ
O He Who sent the winds, bearing good news, before His mercy!
يَا مَنْ لَمْ يَعْجَلْ عَلَىٰ مَنْ عَصَاهُ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ
O He Who has no hastiness on His creatures who disobey Him!
يَا مَنِ ٱسْتَنْقَذَ ٱلسَّحَرَةَ مِنْ بَعْدِ طُولِ ٱلْجُحُودِ
O He Who saved the sorcerers after their long denial!
وَقَدْ غَدَوْٱ فِي نِعْمَتِهِ
and after they had lived in His bounty,
يَأْكُلُونَ رِزْقَهُ وَيَعْبُدُونَ غَيْرَهُ
eating from His sustenance, but serving someone else other than Him,
وَقَدْ حَادُّوهُ وَنَادُّوهُ
acting in opposition to Him, antagonizing Him,
وَكَذَّبُوٱ رُسُلَهُ
and denying His messengers.
يَا اللَّهُ يَا اللَّهُ يَا بَدِيءُ
O Allah! O Allah! O Originator!
يَا بَدِيعاً لاَ نِدَّ لَكَ
O Fashioner! There is no equal to You.
يَا دَائِماً لاَ نَفَادَ لَكَ
O Everlasting! There is no end to You.
يَا حَيّاً حِينَ لاَ حَيُّ
O Ever-living when there was no living thing!
يَا مُحْيِيَ ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ
O Raiser from the dead!
يَا مَنْ هُوَ قَائِمٌ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ
O He Who watches every soul as to what it earns!
يَا مَنْ قَلَّ لَهُ شُكْرِي فَلَمْ يَحْرِمْنِي
O He to Whom I rarely turned thankful; yet, He did not deprive me,
وَعَظُمَتْ خَطِيئَتِي فَلَمْ يَفْضَحْنِي
against Whom I committed grand sins; yet, He did not disclose me,
وَرَآنِي عَلَىٰ ٱلْمَعَاصِي فَلَمْ يَشْهَرْنِي
and Who saw me insisting on disobeying Him; yet, He did not divulge me.
يَا مَنْ حَفِظَنِي فِي صِغَرِي
O He Who safeguarded me in my early life!
يَا مَنْ رَزَقَنِي فِي كِبَرِي
O He Who provided me with sustenance in my old age!
يَا مَنْ أَيَادِيهِ عِنْدِي لاَ تُحْصَىٰ
O He Whose favors to me are innumerable
وَنِعَمُهُ لاَ تُجَازَىٰ
and Whose bounties cannot be compensated!
يَا مَنْ عَارَضَنِي بِٱلْخَيْرِ وَٱلإِحْسَانِ
O He Who receives me with good turn and kindness
وَعَارَضْتُهُ بِٱلإِسَاءَةِ وَٱلْعِصْيَانِ
but I meet Him with offense and disobedience!
يَا مَنْ هَدَانِي لِلإِيـمَانِ
O He Who had guided me to faith
مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ أَعْرِفَ شُكْرَ ٱلاِﹾمْتِنَانِ
before I learnt showing gratitude!
يَا مَنْ دَعَوْتُهُ مَرِيضاً فَشَفَانِي
O He Whom I besought in sickness; so, He restored me to health,
وَعُرْيَاناً فَكَسَانِي
in bareness; so, He covered me,
وَجَائِعاً فَأَشْبَعَنِي
in hunger; so, He satiated me,
وَعَطْشَاناً فَأَرْوَانِي
in thirst; so, He quenched my thirst,
وَذَلِيلاً فَأَعَزَّنِي
in humility; so, He granted me dignity,
وَجَاهِلاً فَعَرَّفَنِي
in ignorance; so, He taught me,
وَوَحِيداً فَكَثَّرَنِي
in loneliness; so, He increased my number,
وَغَائِباً فَرَدَّنِي
in foreignness absence; so, He returned me home,
وَمُقِلاًّ فَأَغْنَانِي
in poverty; so, He enriched me,
وَمُنْتَصِراً فَنَصَرَنِي
in victory-seeking; so, He supported me,
وَغَنِيّاً فَلَمْ يَسْلُبْنِي
and in richness; so, He did not deprive me.
وَأَمْسَكْتُ عَنْ جَمِيعِ ذٰلِكَ فَٱبْتَدَأَنِي
When I withheld praying Him in all these situation, He took the initiative.
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ وَٱلشُّكْرُ
So, all praise and thanks be to You;
يَا مَنْ أَقَالَ عَثْرَتِي
O He Who overlooked my slips,
وَنَفَّسَ كُرْبَتِي
relieved my agonies,
وَأَجَابَ دَعْوَتِي
responded to my prayer,
وَسَتَرَ عَوْرَتِي
covered my flaws,
وَغَفَرَ ذُنُوبِي
forgave my sins,
وَبَلَّغَنِي طَلِبَتِي
settled my need,
وَنَصَرَنِي عَلَىٰ عَدُوِّي
and supported me against my enemy.
وَإِنْ أَعُدَّ نِعَمَكَ وَمِنَنَكَ
If I count Your bounties, favors,
وَكَرَائِمَ مِنَحِكَ لاَ أُحْصِيهَا
and liberal gifts, I will never number them.
يَا مَوْلاَيَ أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي مَنَنْتَ
O my Master! It is You Who bestowed (upon me).
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي أَنْعَمْتَ
It is You Who conferred favors (upon me).
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي أَحْسَنْتَ
It is You Who did good (to me).
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي أَجْمَلْتَ
It is You Who treated (me) excellently.
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي أَفْضَلْتَ
It is You Who favored (me).
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي أَكْمَلْتَ
It is You Who perfected (Your blessings upon me).
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي رَزَقْتَ
It is You Who provided (me) with sustenance.
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي وَفَّقْتَ
It is You Who led (me) to success.
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي أَعْطَيْتَ
It is You Who gave (me).
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي أَغْنَيْتَ
It is You Who enriched (me).
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي أَقْنَيْتَ
It is You Who gave (me) to hold.
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي آوَيْتَ
It is You Who gave (me) shelter.
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي كَفَيْتَ
It is You Who saved (me).
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي هَدَيْتَ
It is You Who guided (me).
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي عَصَمْتَ
It is You Who protected (me).
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي سَتَرْتَ
It is You Who covered my faults.
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي غَفَرْتَ
It is You Who forgave (me).
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي أَقَلْتَ
It is You Who overlooked my sins.
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي مَكَّنْتَ
It is You Who established (me).
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي أَعْزَزْتَ
It is You Who consolidated (me).
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي أَعَنْتَ
It is You Who helped (me).
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي عَضَدْتَ
It is You Who backed (me) up.
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي أَيَّدْتَ
It is You Who aided (me).
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي نَصَرْتَ
It is You Who supported (me).
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي شَفَيْتَ
It is You Who restored (me) to health.
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي عَافَيْتَ
It is You Who granted (me) wellbeing.
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي أَكْرَمْتَ
It is You Who honored (me).
تَبَارَكْتَ وَتَعَالَيْتَ
Blessed be You and Exalted be You.
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ دَائِماً
So, all praise be to You permanently,
وَلَكَ ٱلشُّكْرُ وَاصِباً أَبَداً
and all thanks be to You enduringly and eternally.
ثُمَّ أَنَا يَا إِلٰهِيَ ٱلْمُعْتَرِفُ بِذُنُوبِي
However, it is I, O my God, who confess of my sins;
فَٱغْفِرْهَا لِي
so, (please) forgive them to me.
أَنَا ٱلَّذِي أَسَأْتُ
It is I who did badly.
أَنَا ٱلَّذِي أَخْطَأْتُ
It is I who did wrong.
أَنَا ٱلَّذِي هَمَمْتُ
It is I who had evil intention.
أَنَا ٱلَّذِي جَهِلْتُ
It is I who acted impolitely.
أَنَا ٱلَّذِي غَفَلْتُ
It is I who was inadvertent.
أَنَا ٱلَّذِي سَهَوْتُ
It is I who was inattentive.
أَنَا ٱلَّذِي ٱعْتَمَدْتُ
It is I who leaned (on something other than You).
أَنَا ٱلَّذِي تَعَمَّدْتُ
It is I who did wrong deliberately.
أَنَا ٱلَّذِي وَعَدْتُ
It is I who promised.
وَأَنَا ٱلَّذِي أَخْلَفْتُ
It is I who failed to fulfill it.
أَنَا ٱلَّذِي نَكَثْتُ
It is I who breached.
أَنَا ٱلَّذِي أَقْرَرْتُ
It is I who confessed.
أَنَا ٱلَّذِي ٱعْتَرَفْتُ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ وَعِنْدِي
It is I who testified to Your favors upon and with me,
وَأَبُوءُ بِذُنُوبِي فَٱغْفِرْهَا لِي
and I now acknowledge of my sins; so, (please) forgive them to me.
يَا مَنْ لاَ تَضُرُّهُ ذُنُوبُ عِبَادِهِ
O He Who is not injured by the sins of His servants,
وَهُوَ ٱلْغَنِيُّ عَنْ طَاعَتِهِمْ
and Who can surely do without their obedience,
وَٱلْمُوَفِّقُ مَنْ عَمِلَ صَالِحاً مِنْهُمْ
and Who inspires those of them to do good,
بِمَعُونَتِهِ وَرَحْمَتِهِ
out of His aid and mercy.
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ إِلٰهِي وَسَيِّدِي
So, all praise be to You, O my God and my Master.
إِلٰهِي أَمَرْتَنِي فَعَصَيْتُكَ
O my God: You ordered me, but I disobeyed You.
وَنَهَيْتَنِي فَٱرْتَكَبْتُ نَهْيَكَ
You warned me, but I violated Your warning.
فَأَصْبَحْتُ لاَ ذَا بَرَاءَةٍ لِي فَأَعْتَذِرُ
So, I am now lacking neither justification to apologize
وَلاَ ذَا قُوَّةٍ فَأَنْتَصِرُ
nor power to support myself.
فَبِأَيِّ شَيْء أَسْتَقْبِلُكَ يَا مَوْلايَ
By which thing can I now meet You, O my Master?
أَبِسَمْعِي أَمْ بِبَصَرِي
Is it by my hearing, my sight,
أَمْ بِلِسَانِي أَمْ بِيَدِي أَمْ بِرِجْلِي
my tongue, my hand, or my foot?
أَلَيْسَ كُلُّهَا نِعَمَكَ عِنْدِي
Are all these not Your bounties on me
وَبِكُلِّهَا عَصَيْتُكَ يَا مَوْلاَيَ
and with all of them I have disobeyed You, O my Master?
فَلَكَ ٱلْحُجَّةُ وَٱلسَّبِيلُ عَلَيَّ
You have absolute argument and claim against me.
يَا مَنْ سَتَرَنِي مِنَ ٱلآبَاءِ وَٱلأُمَّهَاتِ أَنْ يَزْجُرُونِي
O He Who covered me from fathers and mothers lest they might have driven me away,
وَمِنَ ٱلْعَشَائِرِ وَٱلإِخْوَانِ أَنْ يُعَيِّرُونِي
from relatives and friends lest they might have gibed me,
وَمِنَ ٱلسَّلاَطِينِ أَنْ يُعَاقِبُونِي
and from rulers lest they might have punished me.
وَلَوِ ٱطَّلَعُوٱ يَا مَوْلاَيَ
Had they, O my Master, seen
عَلَىٰ مَا ٱطَّلَعْتَ عَلَيْهِ مِنِّي
that which You knew about me,
إِذاً مَا أَنْظَرُونِي
they would certainly have granted me no respite
وَلَرَفَضُونِي وَقَطَعُونِي
and they would have rejected and parted company with me.
فَهَا أَنَا ذَا يَا إِلٰهِي
Here I am now, O my God,
بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ يَا سَيِّدِي
between Your hands, O my Master,
خَاضِعٌ ذَلِيلٌ
submissive, humble,
حَصِيرٌ حَقِيرٌ
helpless, and worthless.
لاَ ذُو بَرَاءَةٍ فَأَعْتَذِرُ
I am now lacking neither justification to apologize
وَلاَ ذُو قُوَّةٍ فَأَنْتَصِرُ
nor power to support myself,
وَلاَ حُجَّةٍ فَأَحْتَجُّ بِهَا
nor excuse to advance as a plea,
وَلاَ قَائِلٌ لَمْ أَجْتَرِحْ وَلَمْ أَعْمَلْ سُوءاً
nor can I claim not committing and not acting badly.
وَمَا عَسَىٰ ٱلْجُحُودُ وَلَوْ جَحَدْتُ يَا مَوْلاَيَ يَنْفَعُنِي
How can denial, if I deny, O my Master, serve me?
كَيْفَ وَأَنَّىٰ ذٰلِكَ
How and in what manner can I do so,
وَجَوَارِحِي كُلُّهَا شَاهِدَةٌ عَلَيَّ بِمَا قَدْ عَمِلْتُ
while all my organs are witnesses for what I did?
وَعَلِمْتُ يَقِيناً غَيْرَ ذِي شَكٍّ
I know for sure and without doubt
أَنَّكَ سَائِلِي مِنْ عَظَائِمِ ٱلأُمُورِ
that You will interrogate me about these grand matter,
وَأَنَّكَ ٱلْحَكَمُ ٱلْعَدْلُ الَّذِي لاَ تَجُورُ
You are the Just Judge Who never wrongs,
وَعَدْلُكَ مُهْلِكِي
Your justice will ruin me,
وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَدْلِكَ مَهْرَبِي
and from Your all justice I flee.
فَإِنْ تُعَذِّبْنِي يَا إِلٰهِي
If You, O my God, chastise me,
فَبِذُنُوبِي بَعْدَ حُجَّتِكَ عَلَيَّ
then it is because of my sins after Your claim against me;
وَإِنْ تَعْفُ عَنِّي
and if You pardon me,
فَبِحِلْمِكَ وَجُودِكَ وَكَرَمِكَ
then it is on account of Your forbearance, magnanimity, and generosity.
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ
There is no god save You. All glory be to You.
إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّالِمِينَ
I have been of the wrongdoers.
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ
There is no god save You. All glory be to You.
إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ ٱلْمُسْتَغْفِرِينَ
I have been of those seeking forgiveness.
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ
There is no god save You. All glory be to You.
إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ ٱلْمُوَحِّدِينَ
I have been of those professing Your Oneness.
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ
There is no god save You. All glory be to You.
إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ ٱلْخَائِفِينَ
I have been of the fearful.
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ
There is no god save You. All glory be to You.
إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ ٱلْوَجِلِينَ
I have been of the apprehensive.
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ
There is no god save You. All glory be to You.
إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ ٱلرَّاجِينَ
I have been of those hoping (for You).
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ
There is no god save You. All glory be to You.
إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ ٱلرَّاغِبِينَ
I have been of those desiring (for You).
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ
There is no god save You. All glory be to You.
إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ ٱلْمُهَلِّلِينَ
I have been of those professing that there is no god save You.
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ
There is no god save You. All glory be to You.
إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ ٱلسَّائِلِينَ
I have been of those beseeching (You).
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ
There is no god save You. All glory be to You.
إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ ٱلْمُسَبِّحِينَ
I have been of those glorifying (You).
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ
There is no god save You. All glory be to You.
إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَبِّرِينَ
I have been of those professing that You are the Greatest.
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ
There is no god save You. All glory be to You.
رَبِّي وَرَبُّ آبَائِيَ ٱلأَوَّلِينَ
You are my Lord and the Lord of my bygone fathers.
اللَّهُمَّ هٰذَا ثَنَائِي عَلَيْكَ مُمَجِّداً
O Allah, this is my praise for You, celebrating Your glory,
وَإِخْلا!صِي لِذِكْرِكَ مُوَحِّداً
my sincerity to mention You and profess Your Oneness,
وَإِقْرَارِي بِآلاَئِكَ مُعَدِّداً
and my acknowledgment of Your bounties, counting them,
وَإِنْ كُنْتُ مُقِرّاً أَنِّي لَمْ أُحْصِهَا
although I confess that I could never count them
لِكَثْرَتِهَا وَسُبُوغِهَا
for they are innumerable, abundant,
وَتَظَاهُرِهَا وَتَقَادُمِهَا إِلَىٰ حَادِثٍ مَا
continuous, and prior to a certain event.
لَمْ تَزَلْ تَتَعَهَّدُنِي بِهِ مَعَهَا
You have been conferring upon me with these bounties
مُنْذُ خَلَقْتَنِي وَبَرَأْتَنِي
since You created and originated me
مِنْ أَوَّلِ ٱلْعُمْرِ
from the beginning of my age
مِنَ ٱلإِغْنَاءِ مِنَ ٱلْفَقْرِ
through meeting my poverty
وَكَشْفِ ٱلضُّرِّ
relieving me from harm,
وَتَسْبِيبِ ٱلْيُسْرِ
giving me means of easiness,
وَدَفْعِ ٱلْعُسْرِ
repelling misery from me,
وَتَفْرِيجِ ٱلْكَرْبِ
alleviating my agonies,
وَٱلْعَافِيَةِ فِي ٱلْبَدَنِ
granting me wellbeing in my body,
وَٱلسَّلاَمَةِ فِي ٱلدِّينِ
and furnishing me with sound faith.
وَلَوْ رَفَدَنِي عَلَىٰ قَدْرِ ذِكْرِ نِعْمَتِكَ جَمِيعُ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ
If all creatures assist me to be able to mention Your bounties,
مِنَ ٱلأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلآخِرِينَ
including the past and the coming generations,
مَا قَدَرْتُ وَلاَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ ذٰلِكَ
neither I nor will they be able to do that.
تَقَدَّسْتَ وَتَعَالَيْتَ
Holy be You and Exalted be You;
مِنْ رَبٍّ كَرِيمٍ عَظِيمٍ رَحِيمٍ
You are All-generous, All-great, and All-merciful Sustainer.
لاَ تُحْصَىٰ آلاَؤُكَ
Your bounties are innumerable,
وَلاَ يُبْلَغُ ثَنَاؤُكَ
(proper) praise of You is unreachable,
وَلاَ تُكَافَىٰ نَعْمَاؤُكَ
and Your graces cannot be rewarded.
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
(Please) send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,
وَأَتْمِمْ عَلَيْنَا نِعَمَكَ
perfect Your bounties for us,
وَأَسْعِدْنَا بِطَاعَتِكَ
and make us happy by obeying You.
سُبْحَانَكَ لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ
All glory be to You. There is no god save You.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ تُجِيبُ ٱلْمُضْطَرَّ
O Allah, verily, You answer the distressed,
وَتَكْشِفُ ٱلسُّوءَ
remove the evil,
وَتُغِيثُ ٱلْمَكْرُوبَ
aid the anguished,
وَتَشْفِي ٱلسَّقِيمَ
cure the ailed,
وَتُغْنِي ٱلْفَقِيرَ
enrich the poor,
وَتَجْبُرُ ٱلْكَسِيرَ
set the broken,
وَتَرْحَمُ ٱلصَّغِيرَ
have mercy on the young,
وَتُعِينُ ٱلْكَبِيرَ
help the old,
وَلَيْسَ دُونَكَ ظَهِيرٌ
none can help against You,
وَلاَ فَوْقَكَ قَدِيرٌ
none is more powerful than You,
وَأَنْتَ ٱلْعَلِيُّ ٱلْكَبِيرُ
and You are the Most High, the All-great.
يَا مُطْلِقَ ٱلْمُكَبَّلِ ٱلأَسِيرِ
O He Who release the shackled captive!
يَا رَازِقَ ٱلطِّفْلِ ٱلصَّغِيرِ
O He Who provides sustenance to the young child!
يَا عِصْمَةَ ٱلْخَائِفِ ٱلْمُسْتَجِيرِ
O He Who is the Preserver of the afraid seeker of refuge!
يَا مَنْ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَلاَ وَزِيرَ
O He Who has neither partner nor assistant,
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
(please) send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,
وَأَعْطِنِي فِي هٰذِهِ ٱلْعَشِيَّةِ
and grant me, in this evening,
أَفْضَلَ مَا أَعْطَيْتَ وَأَنَلْتَ
the best of what You have granted and awarded
أَحَداً مِنْ عِبَادِكَ
to any of Your servants,
مِنْ نِعْمَةٍ تُولِيهَا
including a grace that You donate,
وَآلاَءٍ تُجَدِّدُهَا
bounties that You re-offer,
وَبَلِيَّةٍ تَصْرِفُهَا
a tribulation that You deter,
وَكُرْبَةٍ تَكْشِفُهَا
an anguish that You remove,
وَدَعْوَةٍ تَسْمَعُهَا
a prayer that You answer,
وَحَسَنَةٍ تَتَقَبَّلُهَا
a good deed that You admit,
وَسَيِّئَةٍ تَتَغَمَّدُهَا
and an evildoing that You screen.
إِنَّكَ لَطِيفٌ بِمَا تَشَاءُ خَبِيرٌ
Verily, You are All-tender to him You will, and All-aware,
وَعَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْء قَدِيرٌ
and You have power over all things.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ أَقْرَبُ مَنْ دُعِيَ
O Allah, Verily, You are the nearest of those whom are prayed,
وَأَسْرَعُ مَنْ أَجَابَ
You are the promptest of those who may respond,
وَأَكْرَمُ مَنْ عَفَا
the most generous of those who may pardon,
وَأَوْسَعُ مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ
the most liberal of those who give,
وَأَسْمَعُ مَنْ سُئِلَ
and the most responding of those whom are asked.
يَا رَحْمٰنَ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلآخِرَةِ وَرَحِيمَهُمَا
O All-beneficent of the world and the Hereafter, and All-merciful!
لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِكَ مَسْؤُولٌ
No besought one is like You
وَلاَ سِوَاكَ مَأْمُولٌ
and none save You is hoped.
دَعَوْتُكَ فَأَجَبْتَنِي
I prayed You and You answered me.
وَسَأَلْتُكَ فَأَعْطَيْتَنِي
I besought You and You gave me.
وَرَغِبْتُ إِلَيْكَ فَرَحِمْتَنِي
I desired for You and You had mercy on me.
وَوَثِقْتُ بِكَ فَنَجَّيْتَنِي
I had confidence in You and You saved me.
وَفَزِعْتُ إِلَيْكَ فَكَفَيْتَنِي
I resorted to You in awe and You delivered me.
اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ
O Allah, (please) send blessings to Muhammad,
عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ وَنَبِيِّكَ
Your servant, messenger, and prophet,
وَعَلَىٰ آلِهِ ٱلطَّيِّبِينَ ٱلطَّاهِرِينَ أَجْمَعِينَ
and to all of his Household, the pure and immaculate,
وَتَمِّمْ لَنَا نَعْمَاءَكَ
and perfect for us Your graces,
وَهَنِّئْنَا عَطَاءَكَ
make us taste the pleasure of Your gifts,
وَٱكْتُبْنَا لَكَ شَاكِرِينَ
and register us as thankful for You
وَلآِلاَئِكَ ذَاكِرِينَ
and as oft-referring to You.
آمِينَ آمِينَ رَبَّ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ
Respond, respond! O Lord of the worlds!
اللَّهُمَّ يَا مَنْ مَلَكَ فَقَدَرَ
O Allah, Who owns; therefore, He controls,
وَقَدَرَ فَقَهَرَ
and controls; therefore, He has absolute authority,
وَعُصِيَ فَسَتَرَ
and is disobeyed; yet, He covers,
وَٱسْتُغْفِرَ فَغَفَرَ
and is prayed for forgiveness; therefore, He forgives.
يَا غَايَةَ ٱلطَّالِبِينَ ٱلرَّاغِبِينَ
O He Who is the aim of seekers and desirers
وَمُنْتَهَىٰ أَمَلِ ٱلرَّاجِينَ
and the ultimate purpose of the hope of hopers!
يَا مَنْ أَحَاطَ بِكُلِّ شَيْء عِلْماً
O He Who encompasses all things in knowledge
وَوَسِعَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيلِينَ رَأْفَةً وَرَحْمَةً وَحِلْماً
and covers those who quit (their sins) with tender, mercy, and forbearance!
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَتَوَجَّهُ إِلَيْكَ فِي هٰذِهِ ٱلْعَشِيَّةِ
O Allah, we turn our faces to You in this evening
ٱلَّتِي شَرَّفْتَهَا وَعَظَّمْتَهَا
that You deem honorable and reverential
بِمُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيِّكَ وَرَسُولِكَ
(asking You) in the name of Muhammad, Your Prophet, Messenger,
وَخِيَرَتِكَ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ
the best of Your creation,
وَأَمِينِكَ عَلَىٰ وَحْيِكَ
Your trustee on Your Revelation,
ٱلْبَشِيرِ ٱلنَّذِيرِ
the bearer of glad tidings, the warner,
ٱلسِّرَاجِ ٱلْمُنِيرِ
and the shining lantern,
ٱلَّذِي أَنْعَمْتَ بِهِ عَلَىٰ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ
with whom You have conferred upon the Muslims,
وَجَعَلْتَهُ رَحْمَةً لِلْعَالَمِينَ
and whom You made mercy for the worlds.
اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
So, O Allah, bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,
كَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ أَهْلٌ لِذٰلِكَ مِنْكَ يَا عَظِيمُ
forasmuch as Muhammad deserves that from You, O All-great.
فَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَىٰ آلِهِ
So, (please) send blessings to him and his Household,
ٱلْمُنْتَجَبِينَ ٱلطَّيِّبِينَ ٱلطَّاهِرِينَ أَجْمَعِينَ
the elite, pure, and immaculate—all of them,
وَتَغَمَّدْنَا بِعَفْوِكَ عَنَّا
and encompass us with Your pardoning us.
فَإِلَيْكَ عَجَّتِ ٱلأَصْوَاتُ بِصُنُوفِ ٱللُّغَاتِ
To You are the voices of various languages clamoring;
فَٱجْعَلْ لَنَا ٱللَّهُمَّ فِي هٰذِهِ ٱلْعَشِيَّةِ
so, decide for us, O Allah, in this evening
نَصِيباً مِنْ كُلِّ خَيْرٍ تَقْسِمُهُ بَيْنَ عِبَادِكَ
a share from every good item that You distribute among Your servants,
وَنُورٍ تَهْدِي بِهِ
illumination by which You guide,
وَرَحْمَةٍ تَنْشُرُهَا
mercy that You spread,
وَبَرَكَةٍ تُنْزِلُهَا
blessing that You bring down,
وَعَافِيَةٍ تُجَلِّلُهَا
wellbeing that You extend,
وَرِزْقٍ تَبْسُطُهُ
and sustenance that You stretch,
يَا أَرْحَمَ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ
O most Merciful of all those who show mercy!
اللَّهُمَّ أَقْلِبْنَا فِي هٰذَا ٱلْوَقْتِ
O Allah, turn us in this hour
مُنْجِحِينَ مُفْلِحِينَ
successful, flourishing,
مَبْرُورِينَ غَانِمِينَ
blessed, and gainers.
وَلاَ تَجْعَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْقَانِطِينَ
Do not include us with the despondent.
وَلاَ تُخْلِنَا مِنْ رَحْمَتِكَ
Do not leave us without Your mercy.
وَلاَ تَحْرِمْنَا مَا نُؤَمِّلُهُ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ
Do not deprive us of that which we hope from Your favor.
وَلاَ تَجْعَلْنَا مِنْ رَحْمَتِكَ مَحْرُومِينَ
Do not make us deprived of Your mercy,
وَلاَ لِفَضْلِ مَا نُؤَمِّلُهُ مِنْ عَطَائِكَ قَانِطِينَ
or despair of the favor of what we hope from Your gifts.
وَلاَ تَرُدَّنَا خَائِبِينَ
Do not turns us down disappointed
وَلاَ مِنْ بَابِكَ مَطْرُودِينَ
or driven away from Your door.
يَا أَجْوَدَ ٱلأَجْوَدِينَ
O most Magnanimous of all those who treat magnanimously
وَأَكْرَمَ ٱلأَكْرَمِينَ
and most Generous of all those who act generously!
إِلَيْكَ أَقْبَلْنَا مُوقِنِينَ
To You are we advancing with full conviction
وَلِبَيْتِكَ ٱلْحَرَامِ آمِّينَ قَاصِدِينَ
and to Your Holy House are we betaking ourselves purposefully;
فَأَعِنَّا عَلَىٰ مَنَاسِكِنَا
So, (please) help us do our rituals (perfectly)
وَأَكْمِلْ لَنَا حَجَّنَا
perfect for us our pilgrimage
وَٱعْفُ عَنَّا وَعَافِنَا
pardon us, and grant us wellbeing.
فَقَدْ مَدَدْنَا إِلَيْكَ أَيْدِيَنَا
We are stretching our hands toward You;
فَهِيَ بِذِلَّةِ ٱلاِﹾعْتِرَافِ مَوْسُومَةٌ
so, they are marked by the humiliation of confession.
اللَّهُمَّ فَأَعْطِنَا فِي هٰذِهِ ٱلْعَشِيَّةِ مَا سَأَلْنَاكَ
O Allah, grant us in this evening that which we have besought from You
وَٱكْفِنَا مَا ٱسْتَكْفَيْنَاكَ
and save us from that which we have besought You to save us;
فَلاَ كَافِيَ لَنَا سِوَاكَ
for we have no savior but You
وَلاَ رَبَّ لَنَا غَيْرُكَ
and we have no sustainer but You.
نَافِذٌ فِينَا حُكْمُكَ
Your decree is prevalent on us,
مُحِيطٌ بِنَا عِلْمُكَ
Your knowledge is encompassing us,
عَدْلٌ فِينَا قَضَاؤُكَ
and Your decisions about us is just.
إِقْضِ لَنَا ٱلْخَيْرَ
(Please) decree for us that which is good
وَٱجْعَلْنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْخَيْرِ
and make us of the people of goodness.
اللَّهُمَّ أَوْجِبْ لَنَا بِجُودِكَ عَظِيمَ ٱلأَجْرِ
O Allah, decide for us, on account of Your magnanimity, a great reward,
وَكَرِيمَ ٱلذُّخْرِ
a generous reserve,
وَدَوَامَ ٱلْيُسْرِ
and a permanent easiness,
وَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا أَجْمَعِينَ
and forgive us all our sins,
وَلاَ تُهْلِكْنَا مَعَ ٱلْهَالِكِينَ
do not annihilate us with those annihilated,
وَلاَ تَصْرِفْ عَنَّا رَأْفَتَكَ وَرَحْمَتَكَ
and do not drive away from us Your tenderness and mercy;
يَا أَرْحَمَ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ
O most Merciful of all those who show mercy!
اللَّهُمَّ ٱجْعَلْنَا فِي هٰذَا ٱلْوَقْتِ مِمَّنْ سَأَلَكَ فَأَعْطَيْتَهُ
O Allah, include us, at this hour, with them who besought You and You thus gave them,
وَشَكَرَكَ فَزِدْتَهُ
who thanked You and You thus increased them,
وَثَابَ إِلَيْكَ فَقَبِلْتَهُ
who returned to You and You thus accepted them,
وَتَنَصَّلَ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ ذُنُوبِهِ كُلِّهَا فَغَفَرْتَهَا لَهُ
and who renounced all their sins before You and You thus forgave them;
يَا ذَا ٱلْجَلاَلِ وَٱلاِكْرَامِ
O Lord of Majesty and Honor!
اللَّهُمَّ وَنَقِّنَا وَسَدِّدْنَا
O Allah, purify us and lead us to success
وَٱقْبَلْ تَضَرُّعَنَا
and admit our earnest entreaty;
يَا خَيْرَ مَنْ سُئِلَ
O He Who is the best of all those who are besought
وَيَا أَرْحَمَ مَنِ ٱسْتُرْحِمَ
and most Merciful of all those whose mercy is sought!
يَا مَنْ لاَ يَخْفَىٰ عَلَيْهِ إِغْمَاضُ ٱلْجُفُونِ
O He from Whom the closing of eyelids cannot be hidden,
وَلاَ لَحْظُ ٱلْعُيُونِ
nor are the glances of eyes,
وَلاَ مَا ٱسْتَقَرَّ فِي ٱلْمَكْنُونِ
nor is that which settles in the unseen,
وَلاَ مَا ٱنْطَوَتْ عَلَيْهِ مُضْمَرَاتُ ٱلْقُلُوبِ
nor are things vanished under the secrets of hearts.
أَلاَ كُلُّ ذٰلِكَ قَدْ أَحْصَاهُ عِلْمُكَ
Verily, all that has been encompassed by Your knowledge
وَوَسِعَهُ حِلْمُكَ
and covered by Your forbearance.
سُبْحَانَكَ وَتَعَالَيْتَ عَمَّا يَقُولُ ٱلظَّالِمُونَ
All glory be to You; and Exalted be You above all that the wrongdoers say,
عُلُوّاً كَبِيراً
in high exaltation!
تُسَبِّحُ لَكَ ٱلسَّمَاوَاتُ ٱلسَّبْعُ
Declaring You glory are the seven heavens,
وَٱلأَرَضُونَ وَمَنْ فِيهِنَّ
the (layers of the) earth, and all beings therein.
وَإِنْ مِنْ شَيْء إِلاَّ يُسَبِّحُ بِحَمْدِكَ
There is not a thing but celebrates Your praise.
فَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ وَٱلْمَجْدُ
Yours are all praise, glory,
وَعُلُوُّ ٱلْجَدِّ
and exaltation of majesty.
يَا ذَا ٱلْجَلاَلِ وَٱلاِكْرَامِ
O Owner of majesty, honor,
وَٱلْفَضْلِ وَٱلاِنْعَامِ
grace, favoring,
وَٱلأَيَادِي ٱلْجِسَامِ
and huge bestowals.
وَأَنْتَ ٱلْجَوَادُ ٱلْكَرِيمُ
You are the All-magnanimous, the All-generous,
ٱلرَّؤُوفُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
the All-tender, the All-merciful.
اللَّهُمَّ أَوْسِعْ عَلَيَّ مِنْ رِزْقِكَ ٱلْحَلاَلِ
O Allah, provide me largely with Your legally gotten sustenance,
وَعَافِنِي فِي بَدَنِي وَدِينِي
grant me wellbeing in my body and my faith,
وَآمِنْ خَوْفِي
secure my fears,
وَأَعْتِقْ رَقَبَتِي مِنَ ٱلنَّارِ
and release me from Hellfire.
اللَّهُمَّ لاَ تَمْكُرْ بِي
O Allah, (please) do not plan against me,
وَلاَ تَسْتَدْرِجْنِي
do not draw me near to destruction,
وَلاَ تَخْدَعْنِي
do not overreach me,
وَٱدْرَأْ عَنِّي شَرَّ فَسَقَةِ ٱلْجِنِّ وَٱلإِنْسِ
and drive away from me the evils of the corruptive Jinn and men.

Imam al-Husayn (peace be upon him) then raised his head and sight to the sky with teary eyes and said with an audible voice
يَا أَسْمَعَ ٱلسَّامِعِينَ
O most Hearing of all those who can hear!
يَا أَبْصَرَ ٱلنَّاظِرِينَ
O most Seeing of all those who can see!
وَيَا أَسْرَعَ ٱلْحَاسِبِينَ
O swiftest of all those who call to account!
وَيَا أَرحَمَ ٱلرَّاحِمِينَ
O most Merciful of all those who show mercy!
صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
(Please) send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,
ٱلسَّادَةِ ٱلْمَيَامِينِ
the auspicious chiefs;
وَأَسْأَلُكَ ٱللَّهُمَّ حَاجَتِيَ
and I beseech You for my request
ٱلَّتِي إِنْ أَعْطَيْتَنِيهَا لَمْ يَضُرَّنِي مَا مَنَعْتَنِي
that if You answer, anything else that You reject will not harm me
وَإِنْ مَنَعْتَنِيهَا لَمْ يَنْفَعْنِي مَا أَعْطَيْتَنِي
and if You reject, anything else that You respond will not benefit me.
أَسْأَلُكَ فَكَاكَ رَقَبَتِي مِنَ ٱلنَّارِ
I beseech You for releasing me from Hellfire.
لاَ إِلٰهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ
There is no god save You,
وَحْدَكَ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَكَ
only You, there is no partner with You.
لَكَ ٱلْمُلْكُ وَلَكَ ٱلْحَمْدُ
To You is the kingdom and to You is all praise,
وَأَنْتَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْء قَدِيرٌ
and You have power over all things.
يَا رَبِّ يَا رَبّ يَا رَبّ…
O my Lord! O my Lord! O my Lord…

Imam al-Husayn (peace be upon him) then repeated ya-rabbi so frequently and effectively that he attracted the attentions of all the others who, instead of praying for granting their needs, surrounded Imam al-Husayn (peace be upon him) to listen to him and pray for the response of his supplication. Then, they wept with him. At sunset, they left Mount `Arafat with him.
This is the end of Imam al-Husayn’s supplicatory prayer on the `Arafat Day according to the narrations of al-Kaf`ami in his book of al-Balad al-Amin and `Allamah al-Majlisi in his book of Zad al-Ma`ad. As for Sayyid Ibn Tawus, he, in his book of Iqbal al-A`mal, adds the following statements to the supplicatory prayer .However its attribution to Imam Hussain(as) may not be appropriate
إِلٰهِي أَنَا ٱلْفَقِيرُ فِي غِنَايَ
O my God, I am needy despite my richness;
فَكَيْفَ لا أَكُونُ فَقِيراً فِي فَقْرِي؟
so, how can I not be needy in my neediness?
إِلٰهِي أَنَا ٱلْجَاهِلُ فِي عِلْمِي
O my God, I am ignorant despite my knowledge;
فَكَيْفَ لاَ أَكُونُ جَهُولاً فِي جَهْلِي؟
so, how can I not be ignorant in my ignorance?
إِلٰهِي إِنَّ ٱخْتِلاَفَ تَدْبِيرِكَ
O my God, the variety of Your regulating of matters
وَسُرْعَةَ طَوَاءِ مَقَادِيرِكَ
and the swiftness of changes in Your ordainments
مَنَعَا عِبَادَكَ ٱلْعَارِفِينَ بِكَ
have urged Your servants, who recognize You,
عَنِ ٱلسُّكُونِ إِلَىٰ عَطَاءٍ
not to stop at a certain gift
وَٱلْيَأْسِ مِنْكَ فِي بَلاَءٍ
and not to despair of You in tribulations.
إِلٰهِي مِنِّي مَا يَلِيقُ بِلُؤْمِي
O my God, coming out of me is that which fits my lowliness;
وَمِنْكَ مَا يَلِيقُ بِكَرَمِكَ
but coming from You is that which befits Your nobleness.
إِلٰهِي وَصَفْتَ نَفْسَكَ بِٱللُّطْفِ وَٱلرَّأْفَةِ لِي
O my God, You had ascribed to Yourself gentleness and kindness to me
قَبْلَ وُجُودِ ضَعْفِي
before the existence of my weakness.
أَفَتَمْنَعُنِي مِنْهُمَا بَعْدَ وُجُودِ ضَعْفِي؟
Will You deprive me of these two after the emergence of my weakness?
إِلٰهِي إِنْ ظَهَرَتِ ٱلْمَحَاسِنُ مِنِّي
O my God, if amenities appear in my conduct,
فَبِفَضْلِكَ وَلَكَ ٱلْمِنَّةُ عَلَيَّ
then that is on account of Your favors and Your conferral on me.
وَإِنْ ظَهَرَتِ ٱلْمَسَاوِئُ مِنِّي
If evildoings appear in my conduct,
فَبِعَدْلِكَ وَلَكَ ٱلْحُجَّةُ عَلَيَّ
then that is still Your justice and You have claim against me.
إِلٰهِي كَيْفَ تَكِلُنِي وَقَدْ تَكَفَّلْتَ لِي؟
O my God, how may it be that You abandon me after You have vouched for me?
وَكَيْفَ أُضَامُ وَأَنْتَ ٱلنَّاصِرُ لِي؟
How may I be aggrieved and You are my support?
أَمْ كَيْفَ أَخِيبُ وَأَنْتَ ٱلْحَفِيُّ بِي؟
How may I be disappointed and You are undertaking my affairs?
هَا أَنَا أَتَوَسَّلُ إِلَيْكَ بِفَقْرِي إِلَيْكَ
Here I am begging You by my need for You.
وَكَيْفَ أَتَوَسَّلُ إِلَيْكَ
How can I beg You
بِمَا هُوَ مَحَالٌ أَنْ يَصِلَ إِلَيْكَ؟
by something that is impossible to reach You?
أَمْ كَيْفَ أَشْكُو إِلَيْكَ حَالِي
How can I complain to You about my manners
وَهُوَ لاَ يَخْفَىٰ عَلَيْكَ؟
while they cannot be hidden from You?
أَمْ كَيْفَ أُتَرْجِمُ بِمَقَالِي
How can I interpret my words
وَهُوَ مِنْكَ بَرَزٌ إِلَيْكَ؟
while You are their source?
أَمْ كَيْفَ تُخَيِّبُ آمَالِي
How come that You may let down my hopes,
وَهِيَ قَدْ وَفَدَتْ إِلَيْكَ؟
while they are addressed to You?
أَمْ كَيْفَ لاَ تُحْسِنُ أَحْوَالِي
How come that You may not improve my conditions
وَبِكَ قَامَتْ
while they are originated by You?
إِلٰهِي مَا أَلْطَفَكَ بِي
O my God, how gentle You are to me
مَعَ عَظِيمِ جَهْلِي
despite my notorious ignorance!
وَمَا أَرْحَمَكَ بِي
How merciful You are to me
مَعَ قَبِيحِ فِعْلِي
despite my hideous deeds!
إِلٰهِي مَا أَقْرَبَكَ مِنِّي
O my God, how nigh to me You are
وَأَبْعَدَنِي عَنْكَ
and how far from You I am!
وَمَا أَرْأَفَكَ بِي
How kind to me You are;
فَمَا ٱلَّذِي يَحْجُبُنِي عَنْكَ؟
so, what is that which can prevent me from You?
إِلٰهِي عَلِمْتُ بِٱخْتِلاَفِ ٱلآثَارِ
O my God, I have known, through variety of signs
وَتَنَقُّلاَتِ ٱلأَطْوَارِ
and changes of phases,
أَنَّ مُرَادَكَ مِنِّي أَنْ تَتَعَرَّفَ إِلَيَّ فِي كُلِّ شَيْءٍ
that what You want from me is that You introduce Yourself to me in all things
حَتَّىٰ لا أَجْهَلَكَ فِي شَيْءٍ
so that I will not ignore You in any thing.
إِلٰهِي كُلَّمَا أَخْرَسَنِي لُؤْمِي
O my God, whenever my lowliness suppresses my voice,
أَنْطَقَنِي كَرَمُكَ
Your nobility encourages me to speak.
وَكُلَّمَا آيَسَتْنِي أَوْصَافِي
Whenever my features lead me to despair (of You),
أَطْمَعَتْنِي مِنَنُكَ
Your bestowals make me crave for You.
إِلٰهِي مَنْ كَانَتْ مَحَاسِنُهُ مَسَاوِئَ
O my God, as for he whose good deeds are wrongdoings;
فَكَيْفَ لاَ تَكُونُ مَسَاوئُهُ مَسَاوِئَ؟
how can his wrongdoings not be wrongdoings?
وَمَنْ كَانَتْ حَقَائِقُهُ دَعَاوِيَ
As for he whose facts are mere claims,
فَكَيْفَ لاَ تَكُونُ دَعَاوَاهُ دَعَاوِيَ؟
how can his claims not be claims?
إِلٰهِي حُكْمُكَ ٱلنَّافِذُ وَمَشِيئَتُكَ ٱلْقَاهِرَةُ
O my God, Your unstoppable decree and Your surmounting volition
لَمْ يَتْرُكَا لِذِي مَقَالٍ مَقَالاً
have not left any word to be said by any orator
وَلاَ لِذِي حَالٍ حَالاً
and have not left any manner to be displayed.
إِلٰهِي كَمْ مِنْ طَاعَةٍ بَنَيْتُهَا
O my God, too many are the acts of obedience that I have prepared
وَحَالَةٍ شَيَّدْتُهَا
and the conducts that I have established,
هَدَمَ ٱعْتِمَادِي عَلَيْهَا عَدْلُكَ
but Your justice has ruined my reliance on these,
بَلْ أَقَالَنِي مِنْهَا فَضْلُكَ
and, moreover, Your favoring has made me abandon them.
إِلٰهِي إِنَّكَ تَعْلَمُ
O my God, You surely know
أَنِّي وَإِنْ لَمْ تَدُمِ ٱلطَّاعَةُ مِنِّي فِعْلاً جَزْماً
that even my obedience (to You) has not lasted in reality,
فَقَدْ دَامَتْ مَحَبَّةً وَعَزْماً
it has lasted in love (for it) and determination (to do it)!
إِلٰهِي كَيْفَ أَعْزِمُ وَأَنْتَ ٱلْقَاهِرُ؟
O my God, how can I determine, while You are All-supreme?
وَكَيْفَ لاَ أَعْزِمُ وَأَنْتَ ٱلآمِرُ؟
How can I quit determining, while it is Your command (to determine)?
إِلٰهِي تَرَدُّدِي فِي ٱلآثَارِ
O my God, my hesitation in (following) Your traces
يُوجِبُ بُعْدَ ٱلْمَزَارِ
will result in unlikely visitation;
فَٱجْمَعْنِي عَلَيْكَ بِخِدْمَةٍ تُوصِلُنِي إِلَيْكَ
so, (please) join me to You through a service that takes me to You.
كَيْفَ يُسْتَدَلُّ عَلَيْكَ بِمَا هُوَ فِي وُجُودِهِ مُفْتَقِرٌ إِلَيْكَ؟
How can You be figured out through that whose existence relies on You?
أَيَكُونُ لِغَيْرِكَ مِنَ ٱلظُّهُورِ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ
Can any thing other than You hold a (kind of) manifestation that You lack
حَتَّىٰ يَكُونَ هُوَ ٱلْمُظْهِرَ لَكَ؟
and thus it may act as an appearance for You?
مَتَىٰ غِبْتَ حَتَّىٰ تَحْتَاجَ إِلَىٰ دَلِيلٍ يَدُلُّ عَلَيْكَ؟
When have You ever been absent so that You may need something to point to You?
وَمَتَىٰ بَعُدْتَ حَتَّىٰ تَكُونَ ٱلآثَارُ هِيَ ٱلَّتِي تُوصِلُ إِلَيْكَ؟
When have You ever been far-off so that traces may lead to You?
عَمِيَتْ عَيْنٌ لاَ تَرَاكَ عَلَيْهَا رَقِيباً
Blind be the eye that cannot see You watching it.
وَخَسِرَتْ صَفْقَةُ عَبْدٍ لَمْ تَجْعَلْ لَهُ مِنْ حُبِّكَ نَصِيباً
Losing is a servant’s deal that does not dedicate a share to the love for You.
إِلٰهِي أَمَرْتَ بِٱلرُّجُوعِ إِلَىٰ ٱلآثَارِ
O my God, You have ordered us to refer to the traces;
فَٱرْجِعْنِي إِلَيْكَ بِكِسْوَةِ ٱلأَنْوَارِ
therefore, (please do) make me refer to You with the garb of lights
وَهِدَايَةِ ٱلاِﹾسْتِبْصَارِ
and the guidance of insight
حَتَّىٰ أَرْجِعَ إِلَيْكَ مِنْهَا كَمَا دَخَلْتُ إِلَيْكَ مِنْهَا
so that I will return to You in the same way as I have entered to You from them
مَصُونَ ٱلسِّرِّ عَنِ ٱلنَّظَرِ إِلَيْهَا
as being too protected to look at them
وَمَرْفُوعَ ٱلْهِمَّةِ عَنِ ٱلاِﹾعْتِمَادِ عَلَيْهَا
and too determining to depend upon them,
إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْء قَدِيرٌ
for You have power over all things.
إِلٰهِي هٰذَا ذُلِّي ظَاهِرٌ بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ
O my God, this is my humiliation; it manifests itself before You.
وَهٰذَا حَالِي لاَ يَخْفَىٰ عَلَيْكَ
This is my manner; it cannot be concealed against You.
مِنْكَ أَطْلُبُ ٱلْوُصُولَ إِلَيْكَ
From You do I beseech soaring to You
وَبِكَ أَسْتَدِلَّ عَلَيْكَ
and through You do I take the way to You.
فَٱهْدِنِي بِنُورِكَ إِلَيْكَ
So, (please do) guide me to You through Your Light
وَأَقِمْنِي بِصِدْقِ ٱلْعُبُودِيَّةِ بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ
and make me stand up before Your Hands with the true servitude to You.
إِلٰهِي عَلِّمْنِي مِنْ عِلْمِكَ ٱلْمَخْزُونِ
O my God, (please do) teach me from Your veiled knowledge
وَصُنِّي بِسِتْرِكَ ٱلْمَصُونِ
and protect me with Your shielding shelter.
إِلٰهِي حَقِّقْنِي بِحَقَائِقِ أَهْلِ ٱلْقُرْبِ
O my God, (please do) grant me the realities that are enjoyed by the people who are near to You
وَٱسْلُكْ بِي مَسْلَكَ أَهْلِ ٱلْجَذْبِ
and make me follow the course of the people who are attracted to You.
إِلٰهِي أَغْنِنِي بِتَدْبِيرِكَ لِي عَنْ تَدْبِيرِي
O my God, make Your management of my affairs replace my management of my affairs,
وَبِٱخْتِيَارِكَ عَنِ ٱخْتِيَارِي
make Your choice for me replace my choice for myself,
وَأَوْقِفْنِي عَلَىٰ مَرَاكِزِ ٱضْطِرَارِي
and make me stop at the points of emergency.
إِلٰهِي أَخْرِجْنِي مِنْ ذُلِّ نَفْسِي
O my God, (please do) take my out of the humiliation of myself
وَطَهِّرْنِي مِنْ شَكِّي وَشِرْكِي
and purify me from my suspicion and polytheism
قَبْلَ حُلُولِ رَمْسِي
before I enter my grave.
بِكَ أَنْتَصِرُ فَٱنْصُرْنِي
Only through You do I achieve victory; so, (please do) give me victory.
وَعَلَيْكَ أَتَوَكَّلُ فَلاَ تَكِلْنِي
Only upon You do I rely; so, do not refer me to anyone else.
وَإِيَّاكَ أَسْأَلُ فَلاَ تُخَيِّبْنِي
Only You do I beseech; so, do not disappoint me.
وَفِي فَضْلِكَ أَرْغَبُ فَلاَ تَحْرِمْنِي
Only for Your favors do I desire; so, do not deprive me (of Your favors).
وَبِجَنَابِكَ أَنْتَسِبُ فَلاَ تُبْعِدْنِي
Only to Your side do I resort; so, do not set me aside.
وَبِبَابِكَ أَقِفُ فَلاَ تَطْرُدْنِي
At Your door only do I stand; so, do not drive me away.
إِلٰهِي تَقَدَّسَ رِضَاكَ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ عِلَّةٌ مِنْكَ
O my God, Your pleasure is too sanctified to receive a defect from You;
فَكَيْفَ يَكُونُ لَهُ عِلَّةٌ مِنِّي؟
hence, how can it receive a defect from me?
إِلٰهِي أَنْتَ ٱلْغَنِيُّ بِذَاتِكَ أَنْ يَصِلَ إِلَيْكَ ٱلنَّفْعُ مِنْكَ
O my God, You are too self-sufficient by Yourself to be benefited by Yourself;
فَكَيْفَ لاَ تَكُونُ غَنِيّاً عَنِّي؟
hence, how can You not be self-sufficient from me?
إِلٰهِي إِنَّ ٱلْقَضَاءَ وَٱلْقَدَرَ يُمَنِّينِي
O my God, fate awakens my hope
وَإِنَّ ٱلْهَوَىٰ بِوَثَائِقِ ٱلشَّهْوَةِ أَسَرَنِي
and whim has enchained me with the firm chains of lust;
فَكُنْ أَنْتَ ٱلنَّصِيرَ لِي
so, (please do) be my Supporter
حَتَّىٰ تَنْصُرَنِي وَتُبَصِّرَنِي
so that You shall back me and show me the right path.
وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ
And (please do) help me (to dispense with anyone else) through Your favors
حَتَّىٰ أَسْتَغْنِيَ بِكَ عَنْ طَلَبِي
so that I shall depend upon You exclusively in my requests.
أَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي أَشْرَقْتَ ٱلأَنْوَارَ فِي قُلُوبِ أَوْلِيَائِكَ
It is You Who have lit the illuminations in the hearts of Your intimate servants
حَتَّىٰ عَرَفُوكَ وَوَحَّدُوكَ
so that they have recognized and testified Your Oneness.
وَأَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي أَزَلْتَ ٱلأَغْيَارَ عَنْ قُلُوبِ أَحِبَّائِكَ
It is You Who have removed love for others from the hearts of Your lovers
حَتَّىٰ لَمْ يُحِبُّوٱ سِوَاكَ
so that they have loved none save You
وَلَمْ يَلْجَأُوٱ إِلَىٰ غَيْرِكَ
and they have resorted to none save You.
أَنْتَ ٱلْمُؤْنِسُ لَهُمْ
You alone are entertaining them
حَيْثُ أَوْحَشَتْهُمُ ٱلْعَوَالِمُ
when they have felt lonely because of the other worlds.
وَأَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي هَدَيْتَهُمْ
You alone have guided them
حَيْثُ ٱسْتَبَانَتْ لَهُمُ ٱلْمَعَالِمُ
so that all other worlds manifested themselves before them.
مَاذَا وَجَدَ مَنْ فَقَدَكَ؟
What can one who misses You find any substitute?
وَمَا ٱلَّذِي فَقَدَ مَنْ وَجَدَكَ؟
What can one who finds You miss anything else?
لَقَدْ خَابَ مَنْ رَضِيَ دُونَكَ بَدَلاً
Definitely, failing is he who has accepted anyone other than You as substitute.
وَلَقَدْ خَسِرَ مَنْ بَغَىٰ عَنْكَ مُتَحَوِّلاً
Definitely, loser is he who have desired for anyone other than You.
كَيْفَ يُرْجَىٰ سِوَاكَ
How can anyone other than You be hoped
وَأَنْتَ مَا قَطَعْتَ ٱلإِحْسَانَ؟
whilst You have never stopped Your bounties?
وَكَيْفَ يُطْلَبُ مِنْ غَيْرِكَ
How can anyone other than You be besought
وَأَنْتَ مَا بَدَّلْتَ عَادَةَ ٱلاِﹾمْتِنَانِ؟
whilst You have never changed Your habit of ceaseless bestowal?
يَا مَنْ أَذَاقَ أَحِبَّاءَهُ حَلاَوَةَ ٱلْمُؤَانَسَةِ
O He Who has made His lovers the sweet taste of entertainment;
فَقَامُوٱ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ مُتَمَلِّقِينَ
therefore, they have stood up before Him flattering Him!
وَيَا مَنْ أَلْبَسَ أَوْلِيَاءَهُ مَلاَبِسَ هَيْبَتِهِ
O He Who has dressed His intimate servants the garments of fearing Him;
فَقَامُوٱ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ مُسْتَغْفِرِينَ
therefore, they have stood before Him seeking His forgiveness!
أَنْتَ ٱلذَّاكِرُ قَبْلَ ٱلذَّاكِرِينَ
You do mention the others (with bounties) before they mention You.
وَأَنْتَ ٱلْبَادِئُ بِٱلإِحْسَانِ قَبْلَ تَوَجُّهِ ٱلْعَابِدِينَ
You do spread Your compassion before the worshippers direct towards You.
وَأَنْتَ ٱلْجَوَادُ بِٱلْعَطَاءِ قَبْلَ طَلَبِ ٱلطَّالِبِينَ
You do give generously before You are asked.
وَأَنْتَ ٱلْوَهَّابُ ثُمَّ لِمَا وَهَبْتَ لَنَا مِنَ ٱلْمُسْتَقْرِضِينَ
You do bestow upon us and then borrow from us that which You have bestowed upon us.
إِلٰهِي ٱطْلُبْنِي بِرَحْمَتِكَ حَتَّىٰ أَصِلَ إِلَيْكَ
O my God, (please do) refer to me with Your mercy so that I will appear before You.
وَٱجْذِبْنِي بِمَنِّكَ حَتَّىٰ أُقْبِلَ عَلَيْكَ
(Please do) draw me towards You through Your endless favoring so that I will advance to You.
إِلٰهِي إِنَّ رَجَائِي لاَ يَنْقَطِعُ عَنْكَ وَإِنْ عَصَيْتُكَ
O my God, verily, my hope for You does not cease despite that I may disobey You.
كَمَا أَنَّ خَوفِي لاَ يُزَايِلُنِي وَإِنْ أَطَعْتُكَ
Similarly, my fear from You does not leave me even if I obey You.
فَقَدْ دَفَعَتْنِيَ ٱلْعَوَالِمُ إِلَيْكَ
The Worlds have pushed me towards You
وَقَدْ أَوْقَعَنِي عِلْمِي بِكَرَمِكَ عَلَيْكَ
and my acquaintance with Your magnanimity has led me to You.
إِلٰهِي كَيْفَ أَخِيبُ وَأَنْتَ أَمَلِي؟
O my God, how can I fail whilst You are my hope?
أَمْ كَيْفَ أُهَانُ وَعَلَيْكَ مُتَّكَلِي؟
How can I be humiliated whilst I depend upon You?
إِلٰهِي كَيْفَ أَسْتَعِزُّ وَفِي ٱلذِّلَّةِ أَرْكَزْتَنِي؟
How can see dignity if You fix me in humiliation?
أَمْ كَيْفَ لاَ أَسْتَعِزُّ وَإِلَيْكَ نَسَبْتَنِي؟
How can I not see dignity whilst You have referred me to You?
إِلٰهِي كَيْفَ لاَ أَفْتَقِرُ وَأَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي فِي ٱلْفُقَرَاءِ أَقَمْتَنِي؟
O my God, how can I not be needy whilst it is You Who have lodged me among the needy?
أَمْ كَيْفَ أَفْتَقِرُ وَأَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي بِجُودِكَ أَغْنَيْتَنِي؟
How can I be needy whilst You have made me rich out of Your magnanimity?
وَأَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي لاَ إِلٰهَ غَيْرُكَ
It is You, there is no god save You,
تَعَرَّفْتَ لِكُلِّ شَيْء فَمَا جَهِلَكَ شَيْءٌ
Who have introduced Yourself to all things; therefore, nothing has ever ignored You.
وَأَنْتَ ٱلَّذِي تَعَرَّفْتَ إِلَيَّ فِي كُلِّ شَيْءٍ
It is You Who have introduced Yourself to me in all things;
فَرَأَيْتُكَ ظَاهِراً فِي كُلِّ شَيْءٍ
therefore, I have seen You Manifest in all things.
وَأَنْتَ ٱلظَّاهِرُ لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ
It is You Who give manifestation to all things.
يَا مَنِ ٱسْتَوَىٰ بِرَحْمَانِيَّتِهِ
O He Who is firm in power through His All-beneficence;
فَصَارَ ٱلْعَرْشُ غَيْباً فِي ذَاتِهِ
therefore, the Throne has become unseen in His Essence.
مَحَقْتَ ٱلآثَارَ بِٱلآثَارِ
You have erased the traces by the traces;
وَمَحَوْتَ ٱلأَغْيَارَ بِمُحِيطَاتِ أَفْلاَكِ ٱلأَنْوَارِ
and You have erased the changeable by the surroundings of the orbits of lights.
يَا مَنِ ٱحْتَجَبَ فِي سُرَادِقَاتِ عَرْشِهِ
O He Who has screened Himself in the curtains of His Throne;
عَنْ أَنْ تُدْرِكَهُ ٱلأَبْصَارُ
hence, He cannot be comprehended by visions!
يَا مَنْ تَجَلَّىٰ بِكَمَالِ بَهَائِهِ
O He Who has manifested Himself with His perfect Magnificence;
فَتَحَقَّقَتْ عَظَمَتُهُ مِنَ ٱلاِﹾسْتِوَاءِ
therefore, His Grandeur of being firm in power.
كَيْفَ تَخْفَىٰ وَأَنْتَ ٱلظَّاهِرُ؟
How can You be hidden whilst You are the Manifester (of all things)?
أَمْ كَيْفَ تَغِيبُ وَأَنْتَ ٱلرَّقِيبُ ٱلْحَاضِرُ؟
Or how can You be absent whilst You are the Watcher (over all things) and the Present (at all times).
إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
Verily, You have power over all things.
وَٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَحْدَهُ
All praise be to Allah alone.
