IAM Secures Zoning Approval to Build New Masjid in Fairfax, VA

We are thrilled to share the exciting news that the Imam al-Asr Masjid has secured zoning approval to construct its new mosque and community center in Fairfax County, Virginia. This milestone marks a significant step forward for our vibrant community.

“Our current premises has served us well over the years, but it is insufficient to meet the needs of our growing community,” said Sayyid Sulayman Ali Hassan, the Imam of Imam al-Asr Masjid. “Our new planned mosque and community center will give us ample space for our religious and service programs, with plenty of parking and green space and trees to provide a much more wholesome and healthy environment for our families and children.”

This approval came after years of effort from IAM’s team to put together a construction plan and architectural design that will serve the community while meeting the County’s requirements for new construction in the area.

“We have worked with our excellent team of engineers and architects to develop a plan that fulfills our member’s vision, is environmentally friendly, is aesthetically pleasing and fits in well with the surrounding community,” Hassan said. “We believe strongly that the spiritual growth that we desire comes together with physical and emotion health and caring for the community and the environment.”

The pleasing aesthetics of the planned building also caught the eye of some members of the Board of Zoning Appeals.

“What I do appreciate is that what will be visible will be beautiful,” said Board of Zoning Appeals Member Rebeccah Ballo. “All four sides, all four elevations, have been designed harmoniously to have this one architectural vision in and of itself, and event he people that are driving by it on the road that see it will see something that has been intentionally crafted from all angles.”

We hope that this milestone will be one of many on the path to better serving our community in the years ahead.

“We have increasingly realized the importance of diverse programming for not just worship, but also exercise, education, and community service,” Hassan said. “With a carefully designed and purpose-built facility, we are looking forward to being able to better meet the needs of our congregation, community and neighborhood.”
